As onewheeldave said there has been no long term safety testing so far... because this has all been developed and the vaccination programme done relatively quickly so only time can be the judge on that one. It's the reason why no effects to the vaccines were initially known about and have only recently been discovered given the time frames involved. It seems to be having a very good effect on reducing hospitalisations and deaths.
 Share this content via...

Seems like computational tools play an important role in vaccine design. I don't claim to understand the science but on first inspection it seems like tools are available to select and predict candidates on efficacy and other metrics. Other papers draw a distinction between traditional vaccine development methods, and modern computational methods.
 Share this content via...
rogets 141 #6879 Posted July 15, 2021 We got an underground shelter at the bottom of the garden, and we have vegetables growing We got a container to catch rainwater as well as water purification tablets, we bought 100s of purification tablets We have stocked up on beans and bought 3 huskys to pull a sledge on wheels as our method of transport. Once the petrol runs out, cars no longer work. We are getting ready for the worst We are also stocking up on batteries, candles, torches etc... I think we are very much prepared
 Share this content via...

I don't claim to understand the science but on first inspection it seems like tools are available to select and predict candidates on efficacy and other metrics. Other papers draw a distinction between traditional vaccine development methods, and modern computational methods. The computational tools you have drawn attention to seem to be about one particular part of the process: the selection of an epitope, that is the piece of the pathogen which is going to end up being recognised by the adaptive immune system. This is more to do with efficacy, a better selection of epitope means a more 'reliable' adaptive immune response. I am dubious that any satisfactory modelling exists for side effects. I am not saying this because I have any expertise, it's just that biology is soooo complicated relative to the human understanding of biology. The 'model' that does seem to exist, call it 'the judgement of the experts' is that because the body will tidy away the components of the vaccine fairly quickly and because the adaptive immune response triggered by the vaccine should fairly fully emerge within a couple of weeks then any side effects will start fairly soon after vaccination. The clinical trials that were conducted did detect side effects and a whole lot of instances of them. The common side effects were all judged tolerable and seemed to be the kind of thing you would expect from a vaccine. In terms of severe 'reactions' in the clinical trials, these were very rare and appeared at similar frequencies amongst the vaccinated and the controls. In fact by some odd chance, I think for each of the three vaccines where I had a look at the data (AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna) there were more of these severe 'reactions' amongst the control group than the vaccinated group. The clinical trials could not be expected to detect certain kinds of side effects. If you do a trial with a few tens of thousands of people you should not expect to pick up a side effect that affects 1 in 100,000 vaccine recipients. This is why it is reasonable that the blood clots were not picked up by the AstraZeneca clinical trials. The blood clots, by the way, are thus far thought to have killed 71 people in the UK according to the latest information I have seen. Likewise if you give an emergency use authorization to a vaccine after you have only collected a few months of the trial data then you did not of course give the trial the opportunity to pick up long term side effects and are instead relying on expert judgement. 2 hours ago, Longcol said: It seems to be having a very good effect on reducing hospitalisations and deaths.
