petemcewan 27 #4021 Posted February 3, 2021 (edited) With respect to everybody. I'd like to state the difference between "Efficacy" and "Effectiveness". I hear the two terms erroneously applied by various commentators on the telly. When looking at data it's worth knowing the difference. "Efficacy"-data from the lab. "Effectiveness " -data obtained from the community. From a personal point of view. I'm much more interested in effectiveness. Quote Efficacy is the degree to which a vaccine prevents disease, and possibly also transmission, under ideal and controlled circumstances – comparing a vaccinated group with a placebo group. Effectiveness meanwhile refers to how well it performs in the real world.18 Nov 2020 Edited February 3, 2021 by petemcewan
 Share this content via...

I was just listening to radio Leeds and Paul Rowley their political corrispondant said that the recent study of the vaccine found that it also helped to prevent other ilnesses. Made me laugh anyway! Perhaps it was studied under lockdown, when people are not socialising. Did make me wonder if the tests were done in the lab or during everyday living. There may be infections caused by other coronaviruses which may have been reduced by both lockdown/social distancing and vaccination. While all the above may be minor irritations at best to the reasonably healthy for the already vulnerable they can be life ending. Because a few percent difference in the quoted effectiveness of the vaccine overall would not make much of a difference in the real world. 5 hours ago, El Cid said: People over 70 are 10x more likely to die of COVID than those under 70 Yes they are but notice that is nothing to do with vaccine statistics and is the mortality rate from not having a vaccine. Jim117 72 #4025 Posted February 3, 2021 Just got back from taking the in laws for their jab at Manor Park. They were in and out like lightning, loads of people getting done down there, top job all round. Only niggle would be poor location as just off the roundabout and no parking which makes it a bit awkward for the elderly.
 Share this content via...
catmiss 12 #4026 Posted February 4, 2021 My GP reportedly have no supply. Just listened to news report of individuals including teachers in the south posing as NHS workers to get the vaccine. Also interviews on Radio 5 with two girls from the south, both-in their early 20s and with underlying health conditions having been vaccinated a few weeks ago whilst here in Sheffield I know of several people in their 70s still waiting. It’s a funny old world!
 Share this content via...

It’s a funny old world! In truth though, there are probably a very small number of people outside the current target group who have been vaccinated. So whilst they are easy headlines, they will have a very minor impact on any vaccination numbers.
 Share this content via...

I have seen studies where medications are different depending on whether the person is male of female, some medications are given differently, depending on the weight of the person. Many people over 70/80 are much lighter than their younger self, they are also much weaker. You dont think age matters? I was reading that antibody donors need to be quite large, so that they have enough blood in reserve.
 Share this content via...

As you can see from those links I gave the trials encompass differing age groups, sexes and ethnicities and all that is taken into account in the trial. It may matter in the real world but that depends on a number of things and not just age. I know many over the age of 70 (not far off myself) who are physically and mentally still in very good condition. Age is only a problem when the person also has underlying health condition's which then complicates the matter. I was reading that around 90% of deaths that have occurred have been in the over 80's who have also had some form of underlying health condition. People who are younger have also died, but again it was not about age in general but whether they had other health problems at the time. We already know that people who are obese, have diabetes, have heart or lung problems are more at risk of death from this virus regardless of age.
