Sheff Council - Shalesmoor Road Layout

Recommended Posts

If there has been any growth in cycling in recent years then the vast majority is in leisure cycling and not to commute to places of work or shopping trips.

This certainly applies to my friends and acquaintances.

A bike ride around our countryside suits athletes ,families and get fit hopefuls admirably.

Very few choose to use their bikes to shop ,makedeliveries or go to their place of work.

So a spin along Penistone Road and Shalesmoor will not suit even most cyclists.

A complete misjudgement has been made and a white elephant has been created.

They? Who are they? I can't help but wonder what anti-car argument will be put forward when all cars are not petrol/diesel powered? The "They're killing the planet" won't wash then.

Apparently everyone should walk or cycle everywhere, no matter their age or physical condition, the reason for their journey or however far they have to travel.

Does telling blatant untruths help your argument?

I want bridle paths across the city to encourage horse riding.

Far more practical than bikes.

I'll choose to ignore that. Given how often certain forum members have pushed the council propaganda of "Car BAD, Bike GOOD".

Not around Shalesmoor I think you'll find. Unless you count a slack handful as "lots".

A century ago there used to be a lot of people cycling to work in Sheffield because apart from the then decent public transport system, it was all they could afford. As the population has become better off cycles have fallen out of favour as a means to get to work. The less said about the state of public transport in Sheffield nowadays, the better.

As much as SCC hate the car, taking punitive measures to force people out of them simply will not make the majority change their commuting mode of transport. People (and more importantly businesses) will just go elsewhere.

When you say lots, how many do you reckon as a proportion of the work force.

I worked in a company employing a few hundred and one person occasionally used a bike if the weather was nice.

How many bikes do you see secured at the supermarket as people go shopping.

What is the demand for bike racks.

How many kids cycle to school.

You are advancing an argument on the flimsiest of evidence.

I know Tebbit said get on your bike to find work, but I think he was speaking figuratively.

In reality it’s hard for your average tradesman to carrythe tools of his trade in a pannier, and he can’t make many calls in a day.

Probably because you can’t deny that you’re telling blatant untruths.

No one could ever accuse you of being woke 😁. Practical, sensible and down to earth but never woke.

And you peddling (pedalling) a pipe dream.

Lovely weather today for a bike commute home as you come off the night shift.
