Should Google Maps Pick Up My Location From Any Point?

Recommended Posts

Assuming adequate signal.

Example: Imagine I am travelling to a destination that is 15m away. I know the route up to  13 miles without guidance. At 13 miles I stop the car and turn my phone's data on, and enter the destination in to Google maps. Should Google maps  detect my precise location so that it can guide me the final 2 miles-just as a normal sat nav would?

So long as you have enabled  location services - yes.

Hope you got there

Google causes us a problem in that deliveries and taxis as they are directed to a shared private back yard 10m away from us off on another road. There is no access to this car park for us.

Also when travelling from MIA back to Sheffield our Stockport drivers are invited by Google maps to divert via Thornhill between Hope and Ladybower. Not an ideal route in the dark in a minibus for an unfamiliar driver.

Never, never, never use Google Maps on Anglesey as you will be directed back onto the A5 to complete this shortest of journeys unless you are towing and the happy farmer will greet you with familiar greeting "Well I was on my way to Llangefni but I suppose..." and an open hand.

I have to say that I prefer the Google maps app on my phone to my Tom Tom brand sat nav, that I have had for years.

I suppose there is no ideal device for every situation. My satnav takes  too long to find the satalites when first turned on. I used to switch it on 10  min before using. Tom Tom have stopped supporting it with updates now.

I've read articles of some satnavs taking large lorries up tracks that  lead nowhere. It can't be much fun reversing a 38 ton arctic back down bendy lane.

Another good feature of the Google maps App is that it tells you the street name you are turning on to  each time.

At least we have a choice these days.

@RollingJ

The app on my phone worked as you described, thank you.
