lakerman
I saw and old photo of a Sheffield street and I was (rightly or wrongly) told it was Cuthbert street. Am I mistaken? Could it be Cuthbert road?

hillsbro
Hi lakerman, As retep wrote, Cuthbert Road was between Langsett Road and Cuthbert Bank Road, but the directories I have back to the 19th century make no mention of a Cuthbert Street. If the photo shows terraced houses it is most likely Cuthbert Road. Here is a link to a photo of Cuthbert Road on the "picturesheffield" site. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s14801&pos=1&action=zoom&id=17604
Dannyno
Cuthbert Street can be found on maps from the early 1890s, exactly where Cuthbert Road is on later maps. So either those maps made a mistake, or the name changed. See for example: OS Town Plan, 1890 1:500: https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/435500/387500/13/100453 Still there in 1894 on this map: https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/435500/387500/12/100392 But Cuthbert Road on this 1905 map: https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/435500/387500/12/100571 (not sure those links work as intended, but easy enough to find anyway) Edited June 25, 2020 by Dannyno

That's how it seems! The 1881 and 1901 directories also show it as Cuthbert Road.
lakerman
Well, thanks to everyone for trying to solve my question. Unfortunately I deleted the photo in error but I know that it was definitely not Cuthbert Road having seen a photo of that road on Picture Sheffield. I have searched for ages on Picture Sheffield to find it but to no avail. Thanks again everyone.
