'Football Notes & Jottings' Newspaper 1906

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I've signed up to this forum in the hope that someone might be able to help me with research for a book please. I'm a freelance journalist researching a book about the SS Great Eastern ship, which was scrapped in 1888. I have found an archived article from what appears to be the evening sport section of the then Yorkshire Telegraph and Star from 1906. To cut a long story short, this article casts doubt on the provenance of one of its masts. The article claims that the flagpole outside Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, came from the Royal Yacht Alexandra, and NOT the Great Eastern, as has been widely believed for the best part of 100 years now. This claim basically contradicts my entire narrative, so I really need to try and dig into how this story came about. I have contacted the current Sheffield Star but they have no records of the paper's owners back then. As you can see from the attached image, the story was included in the 'Football Notes and Jottings' Saturday evening section publication on 1 December 1906. So, it's a long shot but I wondered if there were any local historians out there who know anything about that old publication and might be able to help me please, or hazard a guess as to its origins? Thanks for any help at all.

I think you forgot to attach the image.
