Rainstorth

Recommended Posts

Evening,

Just a quick one, does anyone know why the road to Rainstorth (Grange Road side) is locked off? I tried to take a shortcut through and found the gate was locked and a boulder in front of the gate. I am sure it is a valid road, just unsure why it is locked off?

It's probably a private road and they are sick of the continued fly tipping (Grange lane is a mess due to fly tippers ) ,although I believe the public footpath follows the line of the road.

It is quite possible for a private road to be a public footpath or a public bridleway. In either case no motorized vehicle is permitted except  by the owners active permission.

As Thorpist says.

The landowner can physically restrict access as so as to only allow walking on a public footpath or to walk, cycle or ride a horse on a bridleway.

The fact that a track/path/road has been used for under 20 years does not make it public. However the Council should be notified  if a public right of way is interfered with.

Update

The road in question is a bridal way.

Obstructing a public right of way is a criminal offence. The highway authority has the right to demand you remove any obstruction you cause.

Better: it's a bridle way.

A bridal way is the aisle down which an intending bride walks prior to her nuptials, usually without any obstructions!
