This is clearly just a thread for dwelling on how terrible white western men are.

Well it would be very foolish to ignore the reality of racism wouldn't it?

It is not commonly known but many police forces in America are sent to Israel to be trained by the IDF. The mind boggles.

Also, in certain states there is a conspiracy between the police, the rap music industry, and the justice system in creating a slave labour system in  the private prisons. Professor Griff of Public Enemy speaks at length on this subject and it is very interesting.

Someone mentioned statistics, so let's have a look at that.

According to study of risks of being killed by police, the lifetime risk per 100000 by race is as follows: black 96, latino 53, white 39, asian 15 (source https://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=dcdetail&iid=245 )

Constitution of violent crimes by race:  black commit 54% of all robberies and 53% of murders; white 43% robberies and 44% murders (source: FBI, Crime in the US, 2017).

White population represents 76% of total, black 16%.

And what is your comment about these statistics? What's do you say they illustrate?

There seems to be lots and lots of mainstream media news clips on social media showing black people lamenting these protests having had  THEIR homes, shops and businesses destroyed by them.

That's the negative side of these protests.

Similar things happened when Rodney King was beaten senseless back in 1990s.

The looters and smashers need to look at themselves closely- why destroy the property of your fellow man, who has worked hard to make something in this country.

Numbers are very clear - black or african-americans are over-represented in the relative numbers of killed by police and also are (largely) over-represented in relative numbers of committed violent crimes. It is expected that probability of being killed by police increases with probability of committing violent crimes. These numbers also don't conclude any racial targeting of victims of police killings.

That’s your misunderstanding of those statistics.

If it is exclusively the case that black people are more likely to die whilst being arrested for violent crime you might have a point.

Not sure Sheff Forum is widely read in Mexico.

The police unions in US are way too powerfull see what's just happened in Buffalo after the two who decked that 75 year old and more or less strode over his body,as he was lying there with his head split open.

Unbelievably the NY police force has a $6 billion budget per year, while other services are getting pared down to nothing .

Thankfully the violence on the rioters side seems to be ending ,they should get the justice they deserve.

I'll expand on my own point for the benefit of Branny as it wasn't clear enough for my liking.

A common claim is, broadly, that black people are more likely to commit (some) crime and will therefore be more likely to die at the hands of police when taken into custody.  Simple enough.  But wrong.

A) If you hypothesize that blacks commit 50% of all crime in the US, for every 1000 crimes, 500 will be committed by black people. It follows, for every arrest you'd expect half to be of blacks.

B) Then hypothesize 1 in 1000 people die in police custody.  In 10,000 arrests you'd expect 10 deaths and 5 of them to be of blacks.  If it's more than 5 they are over-represented.

Saying blacks commit more crime so it's not surprising more die in custody conflates the two things and completely misses the point.
