Is the Forum getting dull?

Recommended Posts

(I) want to do what I can to stop the rot, and ensure that SF has a bright future.

With all due respect, posting on threads like this isn't going to help. Imagine the impression it may give to newbies. Basically you are (collectively) bemoaning the quality of posts/number of posts that suit you to read.

Start a few more threads if you want debate centered around issues that matter to you.

I'm a new guy, so I don't know whether SF has gone downhill or not.

All i can say is that I have noticed a lot of people attacking each other for no reason, rather than debating their point, it turns into a slanging match. I don't think there's any need for it.

I think in some of the more specialised areas, there is less of this, but its blindingly obvious in the general chat and entertainment forum. For example, when I posted a thread about the Da Vinci Code film, and a couple of people really ripped into each other for what seemed to be absolutely nothing.

Sort it out people, talk to each other, don't just shout and ignore what other people are trying to say!!

seriously - how can you bully me online??

you dont agree with my posts so you get aggressive in language and perceived manner, but that's all you can do.

isn't it??

There are instances of people taking against someone on here, and effectively stalking them on the Forum, by constantly turning up on threads the person they don't like is on, and making snotty comments about their posts, and coming out with abusive personal comments and the like.

Certain Forummers are constantly having the p*ss taken out of their posts by a fair number of people. And some Forummers are consistently abusive to a number of others on here.

And, there have been a number of threats of actual physical violence made by Forummers to Forummers.

Personally, I call all the above bullying, of one type or another. Of course, if someone is being stalked on here, they can simply end it by leaving the Forum, and the bullying would stop. But why the hell should they? If they enjoy being on the Forum, they have every right to be here without being intimidated.

Yep, absolutely... This is my intention too. And for this reason (mods, if you're listening...) I would rather it wasn't merged with the other 'Forum is going downhill' threads because that isn't actually what I said. I said it was a bit dull recently - which hopefully doesn't equate to the same thing.

Going downhill implies that standards are slipping.

If you beleive the forum to be dull, surely it's because people aren't posting things you want to read as often....do you see where I'm coming from?

NB - it's probably just me, but threads like this one, and those where people say goodbye to the forum are a bit of a Bete noir for me. If you don't like something you should be proactive in improving it, rather than simply complaining. IMO.

Macca, this might be an obvious question, but if you don't like these kind of "Bete noir" threads then why are you following this one?

I have not been "simply complaining". If you were to look back over my activities on here in the last few weeks you'll see that I have been very active in starting new threads. I'm not suggesting you would waste time doing that (probably not worth it anyway - since most of them have bombed!), but you take my point.

I think there is a difference between "complaining" and highlight an issue, which is obviously of concern to others as well as myself if the replies on this thread are anything to go by.

Perhaps standards are slipping, perhaps not... I'm interested to hear what others think. Please do keep posting, your viewpoint is respected... But don't just imply that I should shut up. Go elsewhere if you're not enjoying this thread.

With all due respect, yourself

Come on, I'm sure newbies are well-aware of the griping and back-stabbing that goes on on here. It's pretty overt. None of us are saying anything that most newbies won't already be aware of, if they've any brains at all.

But you are right that if we're not happy with the threads that are being started, we should start our own. Fair play on that point.

well i've suspected more than one poster of following me round threads.

i've also been threatened with physical violence(within the first week of joining).

and a few enjoy talking the pee when the opportunity arises - although personally i dont take much notice of small minded people who's only argument is typo's or spelling mistakes.

personally i haven't encountered people being abusive as such either that or i haven't been aware it was abuse.

but thanks for clarifying that for me.

In that case, maybe you have a high tolerance level for bullying, which may be fine for you.

But others, such as myself, have perhaps a lower tolerance level of it, and are not prepared to put up with it. It's not civilised behaviour, and should not be tolerated on a civilised forum.

Maybe if you (we, any of us) find the Forum dull right now it's time to walk away for a bit?

It can take over people's lives - you've only to see how seriously some posters take it all to see this! It's NOT real, just a pattern of keystrokes transmitted over the ether, but some folk get very worked up about some threads and posts (and bored by other stuff).

Time to get out more if you're not enjoying it. That's what I remind myself, anyway! ;)

I'm keeping out of this ;) but it's interesting to see other people's opinions - those who dare speak their mind, that is.
