We are in the process of moving to Sheffield. Please could anyone recommend some GP surgeries in Walkley/Upperthorpe/Crookes/Crookesmuir and rate them for quality of service, social distancing, waiting time and general helpfulness?

Many thanks!

Your best bet is probably the NHS choices website. Type in the postcode you're moving to and it will list the local GP surgeries with reviews from patients. Also includes specialist areas of interest for the GPs so if you have any existing conditions you may be able to pick a GP based on that.

Walkley House was once a good surgery, but all the decent doctors have now gone.  The remaining ones  are very mediocre and seem more concerned with their own self importance than patient care.  I speak as a long time user, I have suffered some  very poor treatment there.  The Crookes Practice, did not have a good reputation, but seems to be improving and may be worth a try.  Your best bet would be to try Broomhill or Upperthorpe for a surgery.

you want a rating on social distancing????

Suggest you do some research first as #2 says then perhaps return here with a shortlist if you can not still decide

Hi, I can recommend upperthorpe medical centre.  I have been with them for about 20yrs and have never had a complaint.  The GPs there are very good and caring in my experience.

This reminds me, I need to register with a new practice, the medical centre I'm with has closed and relocated everything to a site outside their catchment area, nearly 4 miles away from where I live where buses only run once an hour and pack up at 3pm!

What a good idea relocating outside your catchment area - fewer patients

bet many like you remain registered so the surgery continues to get their  £154 for having you registered and doing nothing

The managers of the medical centre obviously make more money 4 miles away. GP practices are not run by the NHS, just paid for by the NHS.

to be fair the service over the phone and dealing electronically with the chemist has been perfectly good.

They say the move was due to the condition of the building.

Unfortunately the new location further away (Jordanthorpe instead of Greenhill) is difficult to get to in person if you don't have a car.

The fun now is with my prescription. Normally I have an annual prescription review appointment and get a years worth of prescriptions sent to the chemist to collect in monthly installments. Understandably routine review appointments aren't happening during the Covid-19 pandemic but to request a repeat prescription you have to take a written request into the surgery or fax a copy. Fax? Is Jordanthorpe located in the 1980s?

My GP is the other side of the City after I moved. I decided to stay with them as I've seen, and happy with the same GP for 15 years. I just had to opt out of home visits but no other problem staying with them. I have used electronic for prescriptions for years (Patient Access) and with the shutdown, a call every 14 days is working well too. I have a car, maybe not so much an option for people that have to use public transport or a taxi.

due to covid I signed up with the Co Op app for my repeat prescription - relatively simple and once you understand how it works very simple for repeat prescription just click a few days later they are delivered to my home.

talk about the 1980s my surgery has an attached pharmacy and once upon a time it was quick and easy ask surgery for (repeat) prescription or one off prescription from the doc and pick up next door the next afternoon. then the pharmacy changed hands and now it takes three days

tbh the prescription situation was OK when it was a simple repeat prescription as the chemist sorted that out, service very good. However now I can't request a repeat prescription as they say I have to contact doctor for annual review.

When they changed online systems I couldn't get on the new one. Looking now to get on it you have to apply for two user access codes which involves filling in a physical printed form and getting it to the surgery.

I'll just give them a call, hopefully they will do it over the phone again in the circumstances, staff were sound to be fair.

It will be an arse when I have to actually go for an appointment though, hence needing to change practices!
