Supertram Rail Replacement Work 2020

Recommended Posts

SYPTE's ongoing track renewals project continues in 2020 from the 4th May. This year the Halfway/Herdings corridor is the one affected by this investment in the system.

Area 1 works, which is expected to take until 5th June, sees work taking place to remove old worn out rail and install the brand new rail around Hackenthorpe and Donetsk Way.

- Blue route trams will run between Malin Bridge, City Centre and Birley Lane to a revised version of the current Coronavirus timetable.

- Purple route trams will run between Cathedral and Herdings Park as normal but to an amended timetable in order to co-ordinate with the Blue route between Gleadless and the City Centre wherever possible.

- Yellow route and Tram Train are not affected.

Supertram services will not operate between Birley Lane and Halfway. Alternative Stagecoach buses such as the 7, 80a and 120 will accept valid tram tickets between Halfway, Crystal Peaks, Birley Moor and the City Centre.

See https://www.stagecoachbus.com/news/yorkshire/2020/april/supertram-rail-replacement-may-to-june-2020 for revised timetables.

Thanks Andy.

It's good to see that the hourly trams will be timetabled so that there's a tram every 30 minutes between Cathedral & Townend in the daytime (1 to Birley, 1 to Herdings) instead of the current arrangement where we have 2 trams (1 to Halfway & 1 to Herdings) within 5 minutes of each other & then nothing for the next 55 minutes.

Yes, excellent news, they would likely to have gone bankrupt and had to be mothballed otherwise - key workers and shoppers are relying on the services but ticket sales are too low to come anywhere near the cost of providing the service. Manchester Metrolink was quoted as losing millions of pounds a month with passenger numbers down about 95%.

Surprised they didn't shut it down months back, put replacement buses on (which are far cheaper) and furlough all their staff until this pandemic is over.

You know I thought you were joking with 2 trams  within 5 minutes of each other & then nothing for the next 55 minutes and then I remember that this was Stagecoach supertram we were talking about

Worrying that radio Sheffield have announced a hourly service on  the halfway line today.

I’ve updated them but won’t hold my breath.

yes, wrong on two counts!

Apart from only running as far as Gleadless Townend (suppose it is still technically the Halfway line) the Blue route is now running half hourly!
