Shirecliffe Recycling Centre dont allow people carriers

Recommended Posts

Presumably the no van rule has been abused recently by people using 7 seat people carriers to dump big items such as sofas when the tip doesn't have the staff and/or method of disposal available due to the coronavirus. I actually think it's only been the goodwill of the staff that have let you come on site previously in a VW Transporter as it's clearly a van even if it has seats and ramps in it.

Just to let you all know that people carriers are not allowed on site.

On my only trip out for the week I decided to take 4 bin bags to the tip as I was passing, but because I drive a bigger car ( I have to so that I can get my wheelchair in ) I was turned away.

Before I went out this morning I made sure to look at the website to make sure it was open and noticed nothing at all regarding these rule changes.

I wasn't on my own I also had my Carer with me.

I feel I’ve been discriminated against because I’m disabled and have to drive a bigger car.

Your welcome to dump what you want in the field next to us - well your not welcome - but everyone else does it.

Time these silly rules were stoped no wonder so much illegal tipping goes on.

Complainings was a joke before CV19 so not much point now.

Spot on, said this for years mate. I live outside Sheffield and our council, Barnsley,  have cancelled garden & paper collections and the recycling centre is closed till further notice, I won't hold my breath for a rate reduction!

I actually have an agreement with the site management that I can access the recycling centre once a week because its medical waste that I get rid of.

The council have said I could have a weekly collection but to save them money I told them that I’d get rid of it myself. So hence the agreement with the management.

Still even though I have said agreement I was still not allowed on the site because of the new ruling.

I cannot believe someone can be so stupid as to be taking medical waste to a recycling centre.

Is there any wonder why we end up with daft restrictions

What's worse is that the OP will have been educated on how to properly dispose of it ie the special collection service for non-sharps waste or pharmacy for sharps waste.

Surely places that produce "medical waste" have established arrangements for the collection of it, like a specialist contractor that comes and picks it up and takes it away.

The procedure in this borough  is no special collection for non-sharps waste eg incontinence pads. The advice is to place the items in refuse bags and disposed of them in the general household waste bin. If an additional bin is required it can be supplied upon request. Sharps waste is collected by environmental health.

Not entirely true.

If the waste is "non-offensive" then your normal black (pink) bin will suffice. If this means you fill you bin quickly then you can either request, via your district nurse, a larger bin or a weekly clinical waste collection.

If the waste is "offensive/infectious" then the black bin should not be used and you should request, via District nurse, the weekly collection.

SCC lists offensive waste as including, but not limited to, human tissue, soiled surgical dressings, blood/blood soiled dressings.

Yes, it is entirely true in our borough. I suggest that if anyone has any queries about this they should contact their own environmental health department.  The OP should not have to use the dumpit site, particularly as she is disabled.

You should also know that not every disabled person who produces clinical waste has district nursing involvement.

The ruling on people carriers does seem a little harsh especially if you only had 4 bags. Sheffield are rather keen on the size of vehicles that they permit to their recycling centres. Other than that they are quite relaxed. Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire have a system where you have to register your vehicle and be granted a permit. No permit means you can’t recycle.
