A couple of other bits

 

- Senior Citizen free passes return to normal rules from Monday 8th June (ie cannot be used before 9:30am on weekdays) as more commuters will be requiring the limited capacity in the morning and the supermarket early morning senior shopping initiatives are less of a thing.

 

- tram timetables change on 6th June as rail replacement work changes location, trams on the Blue/Purple route will terminate at Gleadless Townend. The weekend timetable for Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th is available to download at supertram.com and in the journey planner on the Stagecoach app. Service from Monday 8th June still to be confirmed.

Can't help but feel there's more behind the story with the SL1/SL1A being withdrawn on a permanent basis. Got to love the PR spin from Stagecoach Bus/Supertram that there are more journeys - when infact there are actually less than current! Also with the through ticketing been disbanded, it makes you wonder if Stagecoach are imminently about the hand the keys back to SYPTE for operating the tram system...

Worth noting, it looks as though Stagecoach have completely withdrawn the X6 Sheffield to Doncaster Airport service.

There are more journeys. Currently the only service in Stocksbridge (except the local rural buses like the 201) is SL1 every 120 minutes and SL1a every 120 minutes. Replacing them is the 57 and 57a both hourly, so doubled from 1 bus an hour to 2. Running to Hillsborough instead of Middlewood also provides more connections. Additionally the journeys on the 57 early morning and evening that First operate are being reinstated too. Remember this is all Covid-19 temporary timetables and is designed to stretch what little resource is being funded by the government to cover as much as possible.

 

The only through tickets being removed are the singles. Most people buy a daily, weekly or 28 day ticket such as the Stagecoach Silver Dayrider/Megarider or Citywide which will still be available. Additionally those going to Hillsborough shops will now travel direct and won't be affected.

 

The bus service is nothing to do with Supertram. It is operated by Stagecoach Yorkshire as part of the Sheffield bus partnership.

 

I suspect Stocksbridge is likely to be subject to a bus network review post covid.

I am sure that Stagecoach are using the current situation to get themselves out of the mess they are in around that area. The SL services were introduced as an assault on the then 57/8 run by first and to prop up the tram operation along the way. It was a partial success and in the revision of services First took the decision to pull their services as they were less viable because of Stagecoaches actions. The Sheffield Bus partnership however decided that the 57/8 should remain and only stagecoach was willing to operate it. They then found themselves effectively in competition with themselves. Something that must have amused First no end.  The current situation and the inevitable complete revision of services to be offered post covid has given them the opportunity to find a way out of the mess they are in. Also with the re-tendering of the tram franchise in the near future the long view suggests that NOT putting all their eggs in the tram basket is the sensible long term plan. I would find it funny if First won the tram franchise and decided to put on a tram feeder route though

To be fair, another example of a service that was completely unsustainable being culled under the covid revisions. The service has actually had its own form of social distancing in place from day 1 with max loadings being no more than about 10 on a good day. I am sure we will see a few more like this as the industry takes stock and re-introduces only what is needed and long term speculation on services like this one ceases.

The only way I can see the sl returning is if the trams paid for the service as I believe it was when it was first introduced. I heard they were struggling to make it pay as it currently ran. 

I've not heard anything about them bringing them back after services go back to normal but if it is then it probably won't be a 10 minute service

Doesn't help matters when they have more managers than trams...

ALL public transport in Britain is currently operating to the level the government has provided funding for and is based on the level of demand from key workers and other essential travel.
