Covid19 - Sheffield Help Thread. Read First Post Before Commenting Please.

Recommended Posts

Sheffielders have proven to us before that when things get rough they can step up and help and we have every confidence that the Covid19 crisis will prove to be the same.

There will be links below to various sites where you can volunteer help.

I'm going to put a few probably very obvious points up here.

Limiting contact - this includes wearing gloves or using paper towels / plastic bags when handling things like doorknobs and shopping trolly handles.
Carry a bag to put these item in for disposal once you have used them.
Carry hand sanitiser - if you don't have any then there will be a post after this detailing how to make your own.

If there is a big uptake on this on the forum then we will likely start threads for each post code district.

I'm not going to lecture people here as you are all grown ups but please be careful when dealing with financial transactions for your safety as well as that of others.

The usual rules about bickering and off topic things apply here as does keeping things on topic.

I'm sure that with care, forethought and planning we can get through this. The majority of people will be fine even if they do catch this virus so please remember not to panic.

Thank you and good luck to us all.

We take public health and safeguarding very seriously. As such, we ask anyone using this thread to offer or receive help to observe the following guidelines:

* Wash hands thoroughly before engaging in any public activity e.g. leafleting

* Do not engage in any public activity if you are showing any coronavirus symptoms

* Do not enter anyone's house if you don't know them. Stay a metre or more away from anyone who is self-isolating

* If offering to shop for supplies never ask for money up front or for a bank card

* Unless you have express permission do not use anyone's personal information shared with you for any purpose other than giving/receiving aid during the current outbreak

* Only offer to assist with childcare if you have appropriate DBS checks

* We encourage volunteers to undertake any voluntary sector training that might be made available

* Do not attempt to give medical advice unless you are a professional. Only repeat public health advice given by the appropriate authorities

A good wash with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds and getting into all of the crevices, followed by a rinse in running water and drying on a clean towel is the best way to keep the number of viruses on your hands down, but if you have to go out it's just not possible to wash your hands every few minutes. This is when alcohol hand sanitiser is needed.

If you can't find any hand sanitiser to buy, here is how to make your own.  To be effective, the end product needs to have at least 60% alcohol content, which means that most vodka and spirits will NOT work, as they are only 37-40% alcohol.

What you need is something like isopropyl alcohol AKA rubbing alcohol AKA surgical spirits.  In an ideal world you will add a little glycerol/glycerine/aloe vera and maybe a little hydrogen peroxide, but the isopropyl will work all by itself.  Just get a little spray bottle that you can carry round with you and soak your hands, including under your nails, rub it in and let it evaporate.

In the absence of hand sanitiser anywhere I looked, I bought all of the above from Ebay in the last week.

It's important to remember that alcohol hand gel is VERY flammable, so take care with it, and it's not the sort of alcohol to drink either.

Contrary to some alarmist information I've seen however, hand sanitiser does NOT usually contain antifreeze.  As a chemist, I understand that ethylene glycol may look similar to ethanol and glycerol, but trust me, they are really not the same thing.

There seem to be a lot of people in Sheffield who still aren't taking this seriously. Please read the following which explains why you should even if you believe that the virus won't have any serious effects on you personally.

This is the analysis of various strategies to combat this virus that was produced for the Government by Imperial College and which is why they abandoned their 'herd immunity' strategy in the past few days and are now pursuing the strategy of shutting down places where people can mix, social distancing and home isolation.

In a similar vein to Andy's Pub Takeaway/Delivery thread, would it be possible to put together a list of local businesses that will offer delivery of a wider variety of foods? Not thinking of fast food places as such as a lot of those are already part of widely known delivery services, more those niche local companies that'll deliver fresh fruit and veg, meats, bread, cheese etc.
