Cafe Totem Bar

Saw in the star that this is to close as the building is to be demolished and replaced with a 32 storey tower.

pleased to see more redevelopment but this is a shame as there has been a pub on this site for as long as i can remember and they’d done a really good job with the place.

hopefully the people involved find somewhere to else to set something up.

Shame. Nice venue and I`ve seen some great bands there.

Was also called The Rocking Chair before it became Cafe Totem.

It seemed popular enough that the people running it might be able to start things up again elsewhere as a full bar once things are back to normal.

And before the Rockin' Chair for decades it was the "The Nelson" (Nelson Rock Bar).

Never understood the name change front The Nelson to the Rockin' Chair?  Presumably a change of ownership & the new owners wanted to go in a new direction & attract a different crowd?

No chance of it opening up again under any name.  As Makapaka has stated, the entire block of properties in that bit, right up to Union St. has been earmarked for demolition.  A new residential / commercial block is going to be erected.

The Rocking Chair, purely based on the gigs they put on, catered for an indie/alternative crowd (like Leadmill, for example) than a rock crowd so it definitely changed direction. Cafe Totem was the same, as well as hosting some other bits, like post-punk nights (although those suffered when the original organisers left to do one at the Washington, a big messy).

I meant that Cafe Totem might spring up again in a different place as a permanent bar if their basement events continue to do well.
