Where Is Our Mp?

I wrote to my MP  Olivia Blake with a complaint and was surprised that she is following in the footsteps of her illustrious predecessor and providing the constituents of Sheffield Hallam with a similar level of service (or lack of)

 

Just how long does it take to get an office up and running?

Olivia Blake was live on BBC 1's 'Politics England', yesterday morning at 10am, as one of the guest MP's, discussing issues in the Yorkshire & Humberside region - Look North area. 

 

She was offering her views on the ex-police officer who last week won a high court case against the police for a tweet which someone deemed offensive to the transgender community & the subsequent heavy handed police inquiry.  The ex-police officer was sat next to Blake & he ran verbal rings round her.  She looked ill prepared. 

 

Next, she offered her views on the environment, flooding problems, controlled burning of moorland.  You'd think she'd be on safer ground but by now the BBC had plunked a spokeswoman beside her who represented land owners & those with vested interests in grouse shooting. 

 

Again, Blake looked & sounded out of her depth in her responses. 

 

I don't know what she thought she was getting into when invited as a sitting MP on to a political discussion programme but next time a bit of preparation & homework on subjects wouldn't go amiss.

An MP will receive in the order of 20 000  texts, e-mails, letters, tweets, petitions etc., etc. a month.

It is physically impossible for anybody to deal with this deluge of... 

 

Signed letters with full name an address are the only correspondence that are likely to be read from a new enquiry, usually this will be done by another paid (by the MP) and interns. They will be responsible for bringing important matters to the MP.

 

An MP will only get one  Parliamentary Assistant/Office Manager paid for by the  Palace of Westminster. This process of getting the right person requires an advert, sifting, interviews, background checks and a full MI5 security check.  These people are critical and a lot of effort is made by MPs to get a suitable organiser. They are not Civil Servants so they don't have a verified employment and qualification record. 

A new MP will usually share an office in London and find a organise their Sheffield presence.

 

It is two months since most  were appointed

 

Initial  contact should always be done by letter and never by e-mail..

The people of Hallam were silly to vote in a Labour MP again. Such a shame that this once great constituency has lurched to the left to such an extent that it would return a Labour MP after getting burnt so badly when dipping a toe in the water with Jared. If Olivia Blake is another failure then they've nobody to blame but themselves this time.

 

Don Valley is Tory and Hallam is Labour. I never thought I'd see the day. Champagne socialism at its finest.

For the record I emailed her. What is the point of an email address if all you get is an automated response telling you they are still to set up an office.

 

It is quite unbelievable that it should take so long to set up am office are we to believe that all the other new MPs in Westminster still have to set up their constituency and Westminster offices? No I very much doubt it

 

Yes of course I know an MP does not themselves see every email and letter but if they are simply being ignored then that is a different thing

Send an email to Jeremy Corbyn's office & put him in the picture.  

 

I bet if you were to complain to one of the media outlets; local tv, (Look North or Calendar) or mention your gripes on Facebook etc,  Ms Blake's office would be in touch before the day is out. 

 

Remember.  You, me & the rest of us are paying her £80k.

 If something is important enough that it needed the attention of an MP I wouldn't dream of using e-mail.

The same applies to all matters legal and contractual.

Most e-mails will be responded to by standard messages directing them to other sources of help.

The fact is that e-mails to MPs  will rarely be read-it would be physically impossible.

 

You are very wrong in thinking that it is an easy task to re advertise for staff and re allocate offices.

Every MP lost their office, their job as did their paid employers in October when Parliament was dissolved.

Until Parliament is elected nothing can be done until certain procedures are followed which include finances, staffing, role in Government, party, opposition etc. This determines where your office is, the job description of the Manager and what you as an MP can offer the applicants.

 

A new MP is at the bottom of every list, particularly if they are in opposition.

Given that Jeremy was more than happy to leave the residents of Hallam unrepresented for most of the last parliament I very much doubt he could care less about this. All he appears to be interested in now is becoming shadow foreign secretary

It does seem a little silly that the MP is required to setup an office when elected.

 

Surely it'd be easier to have an office for the constituency, with the elected MP simply taking their place in it.

You'd get much better continuity that way and stuff that people needed before the election wouldn't be lost in the chaos of an MP change.
