I remember Porter Brook being the same a few years ago. I seem to remember reading it was due to iron ore coming from old mine workings in the area, dislodged by heavy rain?

Is it really bright orange or is this just a pure Fanta sea?

Probably comes from the little stream that runs through Whirlowdale park  finding its way into the sheaf. Round Stocksbridge way they call it "ochre water".

coppy and pasted from cleanriverstrust.

The natural colour of water that comes from the old abandoned mines across the world is a shade of ochre, the basic constituent being the most common mineral on earth; iron. ... The iron in the minewater is not poisonous in its self but will cause streams and rivers to become biologically dead very quickly.
