I remember Porter Brook being the same a few years ago. I seem to remember reading it was due to iron ore coming from old mine workings in the area, dislodged by heavy rain?

Probably comes from the little stream that runs through Whirlowdale park  finding its way into the sheaf. Round Stocksbridge way they call it "ochre water".
