Concrete Blocks Around City Centre

Anywhere there are crowds of people you will see more and more street furniture whose purpose is to prevent terrorist attackers from driving into large groups.

At some locations they temporarily use concrete blocks.

This is happening all over the UK and most of Europe.

There always has been street furniture designed to prevent selfish parking but these are usually much more flimsy

This has already been covered when the bollards were placed around the station.

Well said.

This has nothing to do with parking.  It's to do with protecting the public from terrorists.  Nothing to be alarmed about.  It's just part of everyday life now in our multi-cultural society and we should embrace it.  And not draw attention to it or admit the real reason why they are there.

If council give me 25% of what is pulled in I be more than happy to go around for them to fine silly parked people.

Personally, in my opinion, they should just wait for the problem parkers and the remove the car via tow-truck. If they want their car back, £200 + daily storage fees.

They can and do tow vehicles in the right circumstances ( they have done it to clear vehicles from areas where roadworks are taking place). However the fees they can charge are as usual set by the government and are quite low. They are set out here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/parking/retrieve-your-vehicle

Essentially the tow fee is £105. There’s normally a parking fine too which is £35 for early payment and there’s a storage fee of £12 per day ( after first 48 hours).

For the vehicle to be towed it has to be in contravention of a valid parking restriction and unfortunately some of the vehicles which get parked in what most people consider “silly” locations are not always in contravention of a restriction, so there’s nothing the Council can do about it.

Wouldn't be that much of an issue if pedestrians were able to look up from their phones for more than 5 seconds.

The ones on Sheaf Street outside the off-licence would be pretty useless in preventing a terrorist attack

Someone from SCC was on Radio Sheffield this morning & said the concrete barriers will be lifted at the end of the month when new legislation comes into force.

The problem on Sheaf St is down to persistant problem parking, mainly, (but no solely), from one individual, who SCC have tried to engage with but they take no notice.  The issue at the moment is that SCC legislation doesn't cover that area.  Any parking enforcement in that area is currently down to SY Police & it's, in the words of the bloke from SCC, not a SYP priority.

So as soon as SCC take over traffic enforcement responsibility in the area, they'll be able to ticket offenders.

How does multi-culturalism provide a link to terrorism?

That’s because they’re there for parking reasons not terrorism it was just someone being a bit daft linking the two.

Are the concrete blocks meant as an terrorism deterrent?  A lot of Christmas markets installed these type of blocks to prevent terrorists mounting pavements and hitting  people

Well they WERE installed to protect the people at the markets from becoming targets of someone who may wish to drive a vehicle at a large group of shoppers.

As clearly said a few times above, the current concrete barriers are solely in place to stop people parking in certain areas of the city while SCC gets legislation in place, whereby their parking wardens can issue tickets.

End of the month, according to SCC, the barriers will be gone.  I suppose anyone in doubt that it's all part of a terrorist related conspiracy theory, could try things out by parking their vehicles & getting a ticket?
