Sheffield 2021 Referendum

There is no evidence at all that a change in the way a City Council operates it's decision making effects voting. No other Metropolitan Council has done it.

Are we really going to change the system because of a political campaign  run by political minorities for their benefit?

A change in which 1% of residents show any interest?

A change by referendum which has already been characterized by a significant number of its supporters in the petition, deliberately or mistakenly, adding multiple and or ineligible signatures.

Even in this thread there are contradictions in how the petition was verified and in the aims of the supporters of change.

The referendum will not be about what the residents of Sheffield need, it will be for marginal political activists to gain influence.

The petition was verified. It met the threshold of valid signatures. No about of whining is going to change that.

If you don't want the way the council operates to change, then vote against it in the referendum. Simple.

Yes as that has always been the democratic way especially with Labour as even minorities count.

As already pointed out how were the residents of Sheffield notified of the consultation? If it was just a bit on the SCC website then it's not really been publicized enough so not surprising that only 1% showed any interest. If SCC were committed enough to publicise it instead of being biased against it then people would have responded.

And the proof of this is?

The referendum itself will be properly conducted for all voters of Sheffield to take part so it is for the people and not just any marginal activists. Not sure what the problem is with that?

True. Maybe political parties who object to more democracy might tell us why.

Presumably the Lib Dems, Greens, Tories and whoever UKIP / Brexit Party are these days would have publicised the consultation widely among their membership?

And perhaps STAG who promoted the petition on their facebook page at least half a dozen times.

Could one deduce that:

a. you support the Labour Party (since you omit it from your list); and that

b. the Labour Party is against the idea?

So Jeffrey - our former UKIP candidate - we can assume that none of the political parties or interested pressure groups have made much of an effort to  publicise the consultation. or if they have, not many people have responded.

Given that the referendum is going ahead, how many people in Sheffield do you expect would be wanting to respond to consulation on developing a set of principles?

The post #16 by Robin-H strongly suggests responses were higher than average.

What exactly is your beef?

Simply this: I'd hope that all political parties (yes, including Labour and UKIP) would actively support the changes for which the Referendum calls. This should then increase voter participation and re-establish the rights/role of those whom they elect. Where Sheffield leads, let other Councils follow.

The so-called "consultation', however, was of SCC's making. Its desultory outcome surely speaks volumes about voter disillusionment- and highlights why the changes are so important.

A 1% response to this kind of consultation is considered good (see post #16).

Somehow I think poltical parties and other interested groups will save their campaigning around changes (or otherwise) for the referendum rather than the consultation.

The people who organised the petition  (not STAG I hasten to add) sound a little desperate in drumming up support for their campaign even though the referendum is a couple of months away.

They badly needs shares? I thought 26,000 people had signed the petition. Haven't they organised a mailing list?

Well - 20 STAG members have shared so far.................................................

A mailing list,  what a good idea!

It will be expensive so here are some ideas on saving money.

Do NOT send political leaflets to all the anonymous people who signed the petition.

Only send ONE  political leaflet to each of the hundreds of people who signed the petition multiple times.

Do NOT send any political leaflets to students- half of them will have left.

Do NOT send any political leaflets to all those hundreds of people from Australia, Barbados, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia,  Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan,  Korea, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey and United States  who "forgot" that they were not allowed to sign the petition.

Do NOT send any political leaflets to addresses with a post code NOT beginning with "S".

Easy this one, do NOT send political leaflets where no address is shown.

They could also record and count the number of returned political leaflets which could not be delivered or, the addressee has gone away or is not known.

Thus providing a mailing list of real and eligible people  for the next political campaign and saving even more money in the future!
