Independent Pub Quiz

Recommended Posts

my friend goes to a quiz in an independent pub and is always complaining that they get treated almost like second class customers as they don't spend quite as much as other people/groups might .   ok - they could go somewhere else but they enjoy the quiz and atmosphere and there isn't a credible alternative.     surely the landlord and staff have got better things to do than single out one bunch of 4 people in a "here they come again"  kind of way .    it might be an exaggeration - the person in question isn't going to post on here cos it would probably be obvious who the pub and people are.        i'm just generalising and saying from the point of view of a punter in general  that customers should all be treated exactly the same by the staff (and quizmaster)  .. who would probably be delighted if they didn't show up .     British customer service!

Firstly quizzes  are usually done by a larger group of people other than just 4 and it is usually ran by the pub itself  to bring in the customers and make sales.

So yes the staff have got better things to do like pulling pints etc but you haven't  said how long you stay and how many drinks are bought.

I know of a pub that use to get 12 walkers in every week and two coffees were bought with the rest of them asking for free glasses of water, in the mean time they were taking up seating from the regular eaters and drinkers. It's  all about business.

That's  not nice but how can you stop non regulars taking part?  You always get some  spoiling it for others.

2 people having coffees and the others just getting free water is really taking the pee,

as is people going in when a prize fund has built up ... though it may have been a coincidence

My friend stays the whole duration of a quiz + answers,  and team varies between 4 and 7  .  one only has one cheap drink

but some others have a few each (pints/halves) .  so yes... can see it from pub's pov they want business but they could be recommended to others if they give genuinely great service no matter what

Do you only go to the pub on quiz nights  or do you go in two or three nights a week? It’s just not on going just to do the quiz and buy a couple of drinks, the landlord has to bring in customers seven days a week not just one day, a quiz is just an event to get customers in the pub and hopefully return a couple of other nights.

If the prize pot is particularly high, a shrewd landlord / landlady would stagger the quiz questions say from 8pm until 10:30pm then & announce the results say around 11pm.

At least that way you keep folk drinking.

Non regulars or not.  There's still no guarantee that s group of strangers is going to win.

On the other hand it's quite annoying to meet someone for a few pints and a chat in a selected quiet pub only to find a pub quiz then kicks off, usually with the MC's mic turned up to 11 and  distorted. So it's time for a quick exit.

It always seems the pub would rather serve those people, who barely spend any money on drinks and eat only the free sandwiches, than normal drinkers. I've had this in the Rising Sun at Nether Green for example but elsewhere too.
