Roadworks On Inner Ring Rd

Anyone else totally fed up with the lack of progress on these now.  They seem to have gone on for ever and they now seem to have come to a halt.  Add to that the ridiculous decision to cut the filters (both ways) towards Saville St and the stupid u turn traffic light it's total chaos.  The roads themselves are in a right state with very poor lane markings, some new ones but they've left the old ones in place.

Yes, I remember first day back last new year and thinking how much longer they'd be at it. Didn't think it would look pretty much the same in a year.

Yes, somebody else who feels my pain and frustration!

It's not only the fact they have been going on for ages but its the fact there's very little that seems to have happened in all that time.

 

There's usually a couple of blokes with a shovel in hand and a roll-up between the lips hanging around but that's about the extent of the work as far i can see (and  i have to suffer this 4 time every day!)

 

On a more practical note does anyone know if there's any information online anywhere that can help explain what they are trying to achieve and the timescales involved?

Probably just continue to bugger up the road system, create more air pollution and start dishing out fines for anyone driving anywhere near the city centre.

There's a plan shown on Sheffield council website somewhere (detailed on a previous thread) but I couldn't really make head or tail of what they're trying to achieve.  What really is frustrating is they have ripped the road up on the filter towards Attercliffe and it looks like they're installing a cycle lane that will reduce the filter to one lane thus causing tailbacks at busy times.  This has also meant they have reduced the filter on the opposite carriageway to one lane that causes tailbacks in the other direction and causes traffic to back up to Parkway every night.  

 

They are supposed to be trying to reduce pollution but by slowing everything down they are undoubtedly causing more pollution.

Agreed, if they'd just open the filter lanes back up it's ease a lot of it, or at least make it flow better. They don't seem to be doing anything to them either.

Move the right turn facility for traffic from Mowbray Street away from the Bridgehouses junction towards Savile Street.

Increase the number of lanes clockwise from Corporation Street to Alma Street .
Change the lane useage on the clockwise approach to Savile Street so you can either go left or ahead at the junction .

Provide a left turn lane into Corporation Street.

Re-route the path of traffic heading for Chatham Street at Bridgehouses to the left of the pedestrian island (See Ref 5).

Segregate cycles from other traffic by putting them on the footway where possible (segregating them from pedestrians where widths allow), (See Ref 6).

Provide a direct and segregated cycle crossing of the IRR at Bridge Street, which is to be promoted as one of the main routes into and out of the city centre.

Replace the pedestrian crossing east of Bridgehouses with one nearer Savile Street

But what is the timescale for finishing, nothing has changed for a while now.

You would think if these works are important to the  city and are going to great improvements to the environment, traffic flow, pedestrian flow and safety and cyclist safety and conveniance and generally be "a good thing" the council or people responsible for the works would put some resourses behind the project and be proud to get it done. As it stands it gives all the appearance as if no-one is bothered and if we disrupt enough pedestrians/cyclists/motorists they will go away kind of attitude.

Precisely. As with the Fitzalan Square "regeneration" why do these schemes take so excessively long? - often with very little (if any) work done on a daily basis.

If you hired a builder/contractor to do a job you'd expect this to be completed in days.  OK, these are clearly much bigger schemes - so weeks or months (in single figures) is probably more realistic. As it is though months and years have gone by without any sense of urgency whatsoever.  Who signed (and who monitors/enforces) the contracts concerned?

is it standard practice for SCC plans to be so badly designed and written?

And contain no start/end dates?

Think the council desperately needs to invest in some basic UX training before they start to  upload such incomprehensible rubbish.
