Puzzled lad   10 #1 Posted January 1, 2020 (edited) Our house was rewired about 3 years ago, The consumer unit has 2 RCD's, say RCDa and RCDb, both rated at 30mA. The rather old washing machine in the RCDa circuit has recently started tripping RCDa. Using an extension cable  I have been using the washing machine connected to a socket in the RCDb circuit. No problem! Is RCDa faulty/over sensitive? Edited January 1, 2020 by Puzzled lad word missing
 Share this content via...

No problem! Is RCDa faulty/over sensitive? RCDs trip if the total current leaking to earth from everything connected through it exceeds 30mA (in reality a bit less than that). It may well be that RCD b circuit loads are leaking less current than RCD a circuit loads, and the old washer takes it over the tripping point on a but not on b.  Heating elements tend to be the leaky culprit in washers.  Presume you have pressed the test button on b to confirm it is ok. poocat   10 #4 Posted January 4, 2020 (edited) Just like bargepole says it may be leaking current to earth but not enough on its own. Plug it back into its original circuit but unplug and switch off as many appliances as you can find that are served by RCD (a). This may help you identify other appliances that are contributing to the problem. Edited January 4, 2020 by poocat Spelling
 Share this content via...

Puzzled lad   10 #6 Posted January 12, 2020 Back home now. Thank you Bargepole23, spider1 and poocat for your inputs. Tested RCDb - it works. Back on RCDa, disconnected all appliances, switched on the washing machine and, before even starting a program, RCDa tripped. This happened a few times. So, connected the washing machine to a different socket on the same RCDa and all worked! The washing machine socket seems to be at fault. If any different, will come back here. spider1   11 #7 Posted January 12, 2020 Yes change plug  see what happens. To proove its washing machine take fuse out of plug bet it doesnt trip . Remember to put it back in after dont use it without fuse
 Share this content via...

Try plugging something else in to washing machine socket see if it trips out then ,that would confirm it is that socket that’s faulty
 Share this content via...
