Ideas - less reliance on cars, stop being lazy and start walking, don't build shopping centres which can only be reached by car. Vaati 11 #3 Posted December 23, 2019 It's the same around Hillsborough and town today as well.
 Share this content via...
ads36 217 #4 Posted December 23, 2019 (edited) traffic is bad because we only spend money making driving easier. We never spend any money on the alternatives. The road system is fine, but the alternatives are non-existent. As a result : everyone drives, everywhere. As a result : congestion. no city has ever reduced congestion by building / widening roads, it's a 100% failure rate. it never works. if you want to reduce congestion, you need to invest in the car-free alternatives. we don't, congestion is inevitable... it's all so sadly predictable. St. James Retail Park is very accessible for many by foot - it's not exactly in the middle of nowhere. 4 hours ago, bassett one said: for the last few weeks its been madness with traffic near st james retail park, cant they alter the meadowhead roundabout as its got worse since the opening of the great shopping centre ,which we badly needed, can it be sorted? ideas? This is more to do with Christmas approaching and everyone deciding to do their Christmas shopping on the same few days before Christmas. On a regular day at any other time of the year the traffic around that area is acceptable with a little patience and good manners. A comment from 4 years ago came up on my Facebook memories today - that the "rush hour" traffic was non-existent, but traffic through the rest of the day was busier than usual! It was the same today. Takes us all longer to get round our visits. I've suggested trialling an e-bike at work but the boss said no...
 Share this content via...

I think you are being very disingenuous here. ”We never spend any money on the alternatives”? “The alternatives are non-existent”? What about the Supertram. Cost £230m. Other cities like Leeds would love to have a tram system like ours. We have also spent very substantial amounts on bus corridors and bus priority to improve the quality, speed and punctuality of bus services. There’s also been a lot spent on cycling and walking and you can see the type of infrastructure the Council are now aiming for on Charter Row. Segregated cycle superhighway. The cities like Leeds and Nottingham which have got cycle superhighways, bid for and won the funding for them through a specific government fund. Sheffield bid for money, but didn’t get anything on that occasion. New facilities for sustainable travel need funding and the Council have bid to the government for over £80m from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, see:https://sheffieldnewsroom.co.uk/news/council-set-to-bid-for-85-million-sustainable-transport-pot/ There are alternatives, but the painful truth is that many car drivers would not use public transport even if it were free. The only way most will get out of their cars is if they are made to (eg access restrictions ) or are priced off the road ( congestion charge, very high parking charges etc). The planners know what is needed, but politicians take the decisions. If we are going to meet the targets for carbon reduction and cleaner air, there are going to have to be some radical changes in how we all travel. s6chris 10 #12 Posted December 24, 2019 The way they designed the car park at St James is farcical - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that having a give way which everyone has to navigate at the end of the access road would cause congestion. Several times I have queued for 10mins to get in, only to find that there are plenty of parking spaces available. If they added an entrance on each side as you drive in, that would be a big help and reduce the amount of traffic backing up on the main road.
