What Is The First Major News Story You Remember?

Recommended Posts

The first major one was  the kidnapping of Lesley Whittle, I would have been around 10 or 11.  I really wanted her to be found safe.

Aberfan for me

I was too young to see that but obviously know about it.  That must have been terrifying to see especially if you were young and at school

1) The Queen's Coronation,

 2) The Great Train Robbery.

 3) The Wednesday Bribes Scandal.

I think they are in chronological order, well at least the Coronation was the first, in answer to the OP.

Aberfan .

Seeing the reconstruction recently on "The Crown" on Netflix brought back the memories.

I remember my mum sobbing and hugging me as a youngster.

Death of King George V1,  Coronation of Elizabeth. Song, "In a Golden Coach".

In those days the Royal family were national heroes.  They refused to leave England for safety in America, when it looked like the war was a toss up!

We cut out the pictures from the newspapers and pasted them in scrapbooks, naively thinking it was the only record future family would have!

We had no concept then of smart phones, computers and the Web, where nothing dies!
