What made you stay in Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

Moved here from Surrey in 1990, when a previous employer requested me to relocate and help start up a new business.

Three years and two kids later, I got a call that they wanted me to move to Reading. My reply that I was happy in Sheffield and wasn't prepared to move ultimately led to my dismissal.

Panic set in as the work I do is quite specialised with few opportunities in Sheffield. I chose to stay put, work on a freelance basis and take assignments wherever/whenever. Thirteen years later I realise it was probably one of the best decisions of my life.

Greenery, affordable rents in safe areas, pleasant atmosphere, great takeaways and good choice of bars mates still here (stayed after uni)...

came to uni in 96 (as a mature student) dropped out kinda sharpish due to ex's ridiculous money habits, but generally i have to say that i love the place, the friendliness of people, their willingness to be your friend at the bus stop or wherever, and although i've seen some bad stuff the good far outweighs it.. :)

I think Sheffield is the most relaxed, easy going city I have ever had the pleasure to spend time in.....I like the generally happy, friendly, helpful people, the proximity to the peaks, the greeness of the parks etc and the fact that we're slap bang in the middle of the country making my trips to the North West, Midlands and even Landan relatively easy.

Here's to the mighty City of Steel!

what this person said, basically.

oh yes the potholes are a pain but its all part of sheffield isent it:hihi:

Glad you all like it! Me I've lived here all my life but don't share your enthusiasm. It's not the place itself- it's the Sheffield Council!!

For years they've tried to make Sheffield a 'trendy' place but the problem with this is that they build & design in modernism, which itself is a fashion. As we know fashion has a lifecycle & sudedenly becomes out of fashion.

Look at the hole-in-the-road cutting edge design at the time & twenty odd years later a stinking place & drunkards hangout. Another example is the Grovenor Hotel just look like scruffy concrete to me! Yet another example is the Old town hall vs the New town hall. Old one still ok but new had to be pulled down?????

They approve modern designs from glass & concrete that do not age well & in a very short space of time need another cash injection therfore starving money from key services e.g. roads & transport infrastrucure!

Can't believe they knocked down the 1930's Yorkshire Grey pub not to build on again but to make into a car park!!!!!

Is it just me or what?????

Not just a car park, but modern office developments, a casino and Sheffield's tallest building - the Conran Tower.

This area will be massively improved once it's all complete.

Sorry Unisol, but I don't share your enthusiasm! The actual spot where the Yorkshire Grey was is a car park that is a fact! Raise a historic building to the ground to to build a car park-someone should be locked up for that one talk about corruption in the Trading Standards they should look at the council for that one. Just can't believe they are allowed to get away with it- it's shocking!!!

As for massively improved-yes but for how long before it looks dirty, grotty & out of date-10 years perhaps-great well worth the money then!

Just like our LISTED Flats from the 1960s thats the real one they should have dragged down what a dump & an embarrasement!!!!

And what the point of building a giant greenhouse if you put two bigger buildings next to it so no light can get in from either side?

Couldn't plan a p*iss-up in a brewery that lot.

We've very few historic buildings left due to the Luftwaffe in the 2nd war & the council are trying to finish the job off for them!!!

And the Government wonder why destinations like Edinburgh, Prague, Amsterdam are so popular. It's because of the culture & historic buildings that have lasted hundreds & hundreds of years. We've just wiped ours away & the planners just can't see it! No chance of cutting greenhouse gasses as people jump on a plane to get a culture injection- i am at loss to see where it is in Sheffield- the 4th biggest city in England.

Please enlighten me someone?

Oh come on, the Yorkshire Grey was hardly a great piece of architecture! And so what about the old car park? I don't understand your point?!?! A new (multi storey) is being built in its place anyhow.

I have great respect for old buildings - i live in a grade 2 listed one myself.

However, progress has to be made in the right places. The St Pauls area will look stunning once complete. The Yorkie Grey would have looked completely out of place left in situ.
