Train Timetable Changes From Dec 15.

Recommended Posts

The Hope valley line has had a nice hourly timetable.

From December there is a slightly but randomly reduced train service between Sheffield (to) Dore, Grindleford, Hathersage Bamford and Edale during the day early afternoon.

Some of the 'stopping' trains will not 'stop' at some  of the stations.

Passengers flying past Grindleford may be able to carry on to the Hathersage, run across the bridge and catch the train back.

That isn't actually a change from the current timetable, a few of the extra trains put on last year to fill the two hour gaps couldn't get an all stations path, its a line with limited capacity with the half hourly expresses and freight combined with long signal sections and no passing loops.

There aren't any big changes to Northern services this December although it is expected over this timetable period the new class 195 diesel trains will start to gradually get introduced to the Leeds-Sheffield-Nottingham/Lincoln fast service, with the existing class 158 trains cascaded to other routes. Once this process is complete the Pacers can be withdrawn.

The big changes to Northern routes are expected next May, for Sheffield that will principally be a shake up of the Leeds-Sheffield fast trains.

On Transpennine Express, there is an addition of a 0521 Sheffield to Cleethorpes and 2126 Cleethorpes to Sheffield. Dore & Totley station gains an earlier train to Manchester at 0515 which is an extra stop being made by an established train. As new trains are introduced to Transpennine North (Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds-Scarborough/Newcastle) their existing trains will be cascaded to Transpennine South (Cleethorpes-Sheffield-Manchester) enabling trains to run as double units (ie 6 coaches instead of 3).

Supertram's tram train service has a timetable change too. Early morning and Sunday services will be reduced to half hourly, however the last departures will be later - Monday to Saturday the last tram will leave Cathedral at 2244. returning from Parkgate at 2316 whilst on Sundays the last trip will be 2032 from Cathedral and 2104 from Parkgate.

That's incorrect. The Hope Valley line currently has a weekdays stopping service every hour between Manchester and Sheffield from Northern in both directions BUT several don't stop at all stations. (There's  a 2 hour 33 minute gap to Dore & Totley in the evening!) That remains almost the same from December with quite a few stops still skipped to catch the unwary.

There is not a 15.21 departure from Sheffield. That's delayed until 15.45 and only stops at Hope, not stopping at Dore, Grindleford, Hathersage, Bamford or Edale, see;  https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y63056/2019-11-04/detailed

From 16th December that will stop at Dore and Hathersage, but still leaving a gap of 90 minutes, see; https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y59174/2019-12-16/detailed

As far as I can see everything else is identical other than an odd minute here and there on timings.

The TransPennine Express service currently starting at Sheffield at 5.11 will start 2 minutes earlier at 5.09 from December 16th and additionally call at Dore at 5.15.

After careful examination I see no other changes of note, although I observe that times on the Hope valley are targets that are rarely achieved, all the Hope Valley stations being in the worst 50 in the country for punctuality - Dore scrapes into the worst 100!

As I managed to foul up the OP -thank you for correcting me, just thought I'd add a little more.

From December 2020 EMR train timetable proposals.

A quick scan:

More late night services from London.

Faster peak time trains to London.

No direct service from Sheffield to stations south of Leicester. Luton Airport requires two changes(or one at St Pancras).

Fewer direct service from Dore via Sheffield southbound to Chesterfield Nottingham.

Saturday Scarborough(via York) ends.

Liverpool Lime Street –Norwich becomes Liverpool Lime Street – Nottingham and Nottingham – Grantham – Norwich. There will be one or two trains to/from Sheffield and Norwich

Not sure we can be certain about specific trains on Liverpool - Norwich from December 2020 based on the limited info. on page 27 and the Q&As.

There are very few who board at Dore towards Chesterfield and beyond, currently only timed at 8.28, 17.31, 19.33 and 23.28. In the reverse direction only trains arriving at Dore at 6.28 and 7.29 have come from Nottingham via Chesterfield.

The East Midlands December 2019 timetable doesn't list their Hope Valley stops (and nor did previous issues, lack of space, apparently) but the TPE and Northern ones do and they're virtually unchanged.

My understanding is that things will remain virtually the same on that route until it's finally split at Nottingham - it could yet happen in 2020, but more likely to be 2021, 2022, 2023.....sometime, never!?

I think the split was pencilled in for December 2020 or 2021 (I can't quite remember which), before then the Department for Transport need to decide who will be operating the Nottingham-Liverpool service and what rolling stock will be allocated to them.

Whilst there is little change to the timetable planned before then, the more worrying thing I think is the rolling stock with 2 car class 170 Turbostar units replacing the class 158 sprinters. Not only do the 170s have less seats but they have no gangway connections between units when running doubled up.

The first 195s started working out of Sheffield on the Leeds-Sheffield-Nottingham/Lincoln circuit yesterday, a second one is out today with more being added through the week.  From next week they'll operate the majority of services on that route as well as some of the Leeds stopping services at the start/ends of service.  Sampled my first yesterday, it's in a different league to anything else Northern currently have.

Avanti are to introduce three rates of fare onto their operation . in other words the old class situation is alive and kicking in todays  World , How is it possible that poor people are deemed to be third class , while those with money or importance thumb their noses from the posh seats in the better class carrages.

You pay for the class of accommodation that suits your needs and budget, it is called choice.

If you simply want to be transported from A to B at an economical cost you buy a Standard class ticket, if you want a little more comfort, space and facilities then you pay for the premium accommodation. In the case of Avanti, which is the old Virgin Trains West Coast route (London Euston to Birmingham/Manchester/Liverpool/Glasgow), I haven't looked closely at their new on board offer but on Virgin the First class ticket price included not only a bigger, comfier seat but also complimentary food and drink.

As mentioned above, the new timetables come into effect this coming Sunday.

Northern's brand new class 195 trains have already started appearing on a few trips through Sheffield on the Leeds-Sheffield-Lincoln/Nottingham route and will be progressively taking over those services on the new timetable until all the fast trains on that route are new trains.

The other express service Northern runs out of Sheffield is Sheffield-Hull-Bridlington has already been modernised with class 170 "Turbostar" trains operating all services, these trains came second hand from Scotrail and have been refurbished.

Northern's local services (Sheffield-Manchester, Sheffield-Gainsborough, Sheffield-Hull, Sheffield-Leeds via Rotherham, Sheffield-Leeds via Castleford, Sheffield-Adwick via Rotherham and Sheffield-York  via Pontefract are starting to benefit from cascaded stock and will be operated by a refurbished  mixture of the various classes of  ex BR "Sprinter" trains (class 150 Sprinter, class 153 single car Sprinter, class 156 Super Sprinter and class 158 Express Sprinter) with the "Pacer" railbus fleet gradually being withdrawn and going for scrap, all should be gone by summer 2020.

On Tram Train there are changes to the evening service with later last departures although early morning and Sunday services are reduced slightly in frequency to half hourly. The Purple route tram, which is poorly used, is also reduced to half hourly all day every day, although there is a slight improvement in a later last departure for Herdings Monday-Saturday.
