Pc Back Up

I have a Seagate back up unit which I have been told needs replacing. 

I have been receiving failed messages for a while

 

Recommendations please for a new unit. I have been recommended a Samsung Portable  SSD T5  500GB  Ext SSD  £86-99 on Amazon

 

Please don't blind me with technical gobbledigook, my knowledge is very limited

To be honest if it is just for backup I would not go for a more expensive SSD but something like this (only an example) or similar:

Its still USB 3 and would work just as well. You could also pick up USB 3 external drives cheaper on Amazon as well. Argos do a Seagate Expansion 500GB portable USB drive for £35.99 so have a look around.

The reason someone may go for SSD over traditional, is safety - if you're using it for backup/long term storage etc, an SSD would be way better as it's less likely to be damaged if dropped etc...

I've always found Buffalo drives to be good. The last 2TB one I purchased from ebuyer automatically recognises if you have attached to USB3 port (LED shows Blue) or USB2 port (LED shows Green)

SSD's cost more per MB and will do so for a few years yet.   NAND technology is not in it's infancy but still has a long way to go.

No one should ever back up to a single media, regardless.   All media has a lifespan, and that lifespan can be cut considerably short as you say by incidents such as impact (being dropped) or temperature etc. 

 

The trick is to back up often, and to back up to more than one location.
