January 2020 Bus Service Changes

Try the hourly 135, regularly missing so a 2 hour wait. Most people get another bus and walk take an up to 40 min walk or share taxis. Prediction is this route will go due to underuse!

That is shocking. I hope they don't remove the 98 from where I catch it. Not many people get on at my stop but then it gets crammed once it gets to Longley. Next thing they'll be saying its not needed at the bottom of Wordsworth Avenue/Scraithwood Drive.

I was going to buy my new 28 day Megarider today on the Stagecoach website, as I normally do, however it only gives me the option to buy the "old" 28 day Megarider at £56.

It states that this ticket will not be available to buy or use from 2/1/2020 but doesn't give you the option to buy the new Silver ticket at £62.

As I want my ticket to start from the 2nd of January for when I go back to work, does this mean, if I buy the £56 ticket, it will not be valid or will I be able to use it for that 28 day period in January?

Obviously I don't want to buy a ticket that wont be valid but as it doesn't offer the option to buy the new ticket  I'm somewhat confused!

It does say the old tickets aren't available to use from 2 Jan but also the FAQs for the new tickets say your old ticket is valid till it runs out so it's anyone's guess really!

When they changed the tickets round last year (Sheffield -> South Yorkshire) my old ticket was worked on the X17 but not the 43 for a while.

My current ticket is valid till 13th Jan so I'm expecting trouble again - I keep my account details available on my phone so I can show the driver there should be a valid ticket in the card.

Sounds like the wording is a bit misleading. The new ticket range and prices came into operation on the 2nd January and for the weeks beforehand new customers were not being signed up to the "Xtra" Pay Monthly schemes, however weekly/28 day tickets purchased before the new tickets launched on 2nd January are valid until they expire as normal.

Find it's such a shame that the 52 Crookes bus no longer goes down Hillsborough, it's only a few more stops, and really inconvenient, especially when its raining and cold. Observed the buses that go to the terminus are usually almost empty. Why they cant let senior citizens get on the bus, at 9am is so cruel, again, the buses going to town, Hillsborough, are mostly empty ! It's just not fair, and mean spirited. It's a real LIFELINE for elderly people, who otherwise wouldn't go out, due to the cost of bus fares.😭

The 52a goes down to Hillsborough and beyond at frequent intervals so no lack of provision, and the numbers of passengers between Crookes and Hillsborough isn't really enough to justify more than at present - the 52 was running down there with very few fare paying passengers on board, getting stuck in the Hillsborough traffic and becoming delayed impacting on passengers wanting to travel from Crookes, Broomhill, the hospitals, City Centre, Darnall, Handsworth and Woodhouse - so for the sake of a small handful of people waiting a few minutes less to Hillsborough, hundreds of passengers on the rest of the route were late!

The government provides funding for pensioners to ride for free between 09:30 and 23:00 Mondays to Fridays and any time at weekends. I'm sure the bus companies would happily discuss changes to those hours if they were offered suitable reimbursement. There is of course a danger of commuters that have paid for a season ticket being unable to get on buses to work due to them being full of pensioners riding for free at rush hour which wouldn't really be fair. The very most expensive single ticket within Sheffield is no more than about £3 and I'm sure pensioners travelling at that time in the morning could afford it given the likely reasons for travel.

I am using X1 daily, and, its not bad.

Its diabolical.

On Monday, I waited 60 min in front of Moor Market on the way to work, 3  X1 busses were "out of service".

When I read that from January 2020 there will be even less buses,  I suddenly remembered

the sitcom from 80s with Rik Mayall, called "The  New Statesman".

That would that type of joke.

If you're unlucky enough to need a bus when the route starts just before 09:30-10:00 then you'll know that often buses fill up with OAPs.

I once was on a bus and an OAP tried to use his pass at 08:40 and then refused to either get off or pay when the driver advised him of the time restrictions, citing "I'm an OAP I have a right to travel free"

Personally I'd like to see a nominal charge applied. Nothing major, say £1 per trip similarly to the Student single in Sheffield. £2 there and back isn't going to break the bank.

One of the problems is that a lot of pensioners seem to think they have paid into a savings scheme that they can now draw from. The problem is it couldnt be further from the truth. What they have paid for was the travel concessions at that time.  Those concessions were a lot less generous than those in force now and those are being funded by the current working population and its costing a lot of money

As a disabled passenger i have a bus pass that i am restricted to i cannot use it before 9.30am so if i have to travel before that time i just pay it don't see i problem with doing that  if you look on council website it says

Free bus travel

Gold Card allows you to travel free, off-peak on local buses throughout the whole of England, after 9:30am up to 11pm weekdays and at any time during weekends and bank holidays.

Free off peak local bus travel for pensioners and the disabled was an English national initiative introduced by the Labour government in 2006. The government provides funding to local authorities to reimburse bus operators for each free boarding. The principle is one of a caring and healthy society - no pensioner should be unable to go to doctors, dentists, library or socialise because of barriers such as struggling to buy a bus ticket.

The big issue is that this scheme is underfunded and the reimbursement to bus operators is quite low to the point that services that have a high proportion of elderly passengers are not financially viable to operate anymore. Add to that the local authorities in some cases are already paying out more in reimbursements than they receive from the government so are having to take money away from other public transport spending such as funding non commercial community bus services to pay for it - and this is against a background of budget cuts as part of the Conservative government austerity policy.

I agree with free travel being restricted to off peak so it doesn't impact on commuters - pensioners that have a reason to travel at peak time can generally afford to buy a single ticket - however I also agree with the principle behind the free travel scheme, so the answer to this and wider transport issues is for the government and local authorities to FUND IT PROPERLY!

The service reduction actually announced is less than what was quoted in the consultation.

X1/X10 Sheffield-Meadowhall-Rotherham will be reduced from 6 buses per hour to buses 4 per hour (supplemented of course by the X78 and Supertram) with the busier Rotherham-Maltby section retaining the 6 buses per hour frequency.

Generally the occasions that buses go out of service and there is a longer wait than scheduled is when there have been significant delays due to traffic congestion or other reasons and buses are sent out of service non stop to get to where the timetable says they should be in order to recover the service back to timetable. This seems to be happening a lot more recently across the bus network, not just on the X1/X10, however December is always bad with more traffic on the road (Meadowhall shopping traffic always bad in the run up to Christmas too) and more car accidents with it being dark at rush hour.
