Porn blocker bill Is Cancelled

After nearly 4 years, there was no big finish for the “porn blocker” bill as Nicky Morgan announced it was to be cancelled.

The culture secretary said other measures were to be put in place as part of their Online Harms white paper, but wouldn’t confirm it would involve the supply of quieter footwear to wives, girlfriends and mothers.

A VPN (or Virtual Private Network, when it goes by its full name) is one of those terms that get increasingly more mentions as online security and privacy come under scrutiny.

 

It seems that many see a VPN service as the go-to solution whenever they feel their online activities are not quite private (or at least, not as private as they’d like them to be). Additionally, a VPN is a fierce tool when it comes to accessing restricted websites and media that are off-limits for a variety of reasons (government censorship, geographic restrictions, copyright regulations, etc) without as much as batting an eyelash, as well as preventing your ISP (Internet Service Provider) from throttling your speed based on usage (it happens).

VPN sales have apparently gone through the roof since this measure was announced. Also there has much behind the scenes lobbying against unintended consequences of this plan.

 

It is intended to protect children from exposure to porn but the cost is to expose many adults to fraud by making them hand over either credit card details or personal passport/driving licence details to verify their age.

 

A badly thought out, rubbish idea.

I doubt it as until it is enforced and live then there is no need to have one and now its been abandoned there is also no need to when it comes to porn. I have had a VPN since well before this was even debated in parliament.

 

I agree about the badly thought out rubbish idea though.

Watching the telly last evening, in one of the Ad breaks there was an Ad for a VPN provider. Apparently you have to subscribe and pay to use them. I thought they were free, like going incognito for instance. 

 

Is this VPN jobby how some posters on the forum have different accounts, allegedly.

I suspect they do log IP’s apelike.

 

Probably maintain a list of IP’s attached to each account; and automated systems that alert admin when the same IP is matched to multiple accounts.

 

Why anyone would want 2 accounts is beyond me though.

It's been found before with Trolls and such, one account gets blocked so they pop on with a new one and continue mouthing off.

Trouble is that would only work for static IP's and as nearly all have dynamic ones it would be useless to do that. Just looked at my logs and since June my IP has change 11 times.

I know someone who shared a flat with someone who had been banned from SF and she could never register an account with SF, presumably because she was sharing an IP address which had been previously flagged by SF.  😳

In that case it was probably a static IP at that address. As stated most people have dynamic IP's and not static ones. If you want a static one you usually need to apply to the ISP for one.
