DerbyTup 10 #13 Posted October 6, 2019 I took my test in Worksop. I emerged from a junction, turning right to join the major road. About 50 yards down the road there was a level crossing and the gates began to close, causing the traffic on the main road to queue up just as I was turning right. I couldn't make a full right turn but instead was at 90 degrees in the road, looking straight ahead into the window of a small terraced house, where a woman was doing her ironing. The woman was staring at me - and me and the examiner were staring at her. It was an uncomfortable few minutes whilst the gates opened again and the traffic began to move, allowing me to complete my turn. There is nothing in the Highway Code that says you shouldn't stare into someone's front window whilst they are doing their ironing. But I failed that particular test for other reasons, "failing to make adequate progress in varying traffic conditions" was one of them. I think it's because I didn't get out of 3rd gear. And the other was, "failing to indicate" - this was as I turned left into Woolworth's before coming to a halt at the Pick n Mix counter. hobinfoot 25 #14 Posted October 6, 2019 On my first test a motorcycle crashed into the car the examiner said the test was over. He told my instructor that he would have passed me if the crash hadn’t happened. It took me four more attempts before I passed. Person6 10 #16 Posted October 7, 2019 My motorcycle test (a very long time ago) the examiner sent me off round the block and said "I will step out into the road and you should do an emergency stop when you see me". For some peculiar reason he did it from the opposite side of the road, I saw him but the guy on a moped coming the other way didn't and they had a glancing collision with mopeds, clipboards and blokes all ending up on the floor. My examiner was taken away in an ambulance and my test finished there. I had to return to the test centre and tell them the examiner was at the casualty department. My first car test failed due to ingition problems with the car - Ford Escort and British School of Motoring- it kept stalling in traffic which meant progress was erratic and the examiner called a halt, walked back to the test centre and sent my very sheepish instructor to come and sort out me and the car. Apparently this was an occupational hazard for examiners in the old pre-pursuit bike test days.
 Share this content via...
KMG 0 #18 Posted October 7, 2019 Took my test in 1980, my driving instructor was having kittens waiting for me to return to the test centre, he actually admitted he'd had visions of me writing off his car (so much for having faith in my driving skills). My test was at 4.00 pm on a cold, wet, dark Thursday afternoon in November from Handsworth test centre. However the examiner was late so it was 4:15 when we set off just as the old Moore and Wrights factory was turning out, I followed a route through the Woodthorpe onto Price of Wales Road and down to Darnall where it turned out there was a major water pipe burst on Staniforth Rd. Stopped 3 times on 3 different side streets to attempt a 3 point turn but waited so long each time because of traffic coming from all directions that the examiner told me to drive on and we'd come back to it. A bus pulled out of the Greenland Road bus depot at speed right in front of me and I had to preform an unscheduled emergency stop. Finally arrived back at the test centre almost an hour later. Yes I did pass, first time, I will never forget the look of relief on my instructors face.
 Share this content via...
old tup 30 #19 Posted October 10, 2019 I took my driving test in 1960 in the Abbeydale Road area, everything was going well until the tester chappie out of the blue asked me "What gear are you in?".So I replied "Sports coat and trousers!"trying to lighten the tense atmosphere in the car!.Not a hope ,then he said "When I slap my pad do an emergency brake procedure!",he slapped his pad I braked and nearly put him through the windscreen!.I thought that's it I,ve failed but to my surprise he passed me and praised my driving on the test, just shows you never can tell!.
