In other news, the South East of England is about to get flooded. I wonder what the government reaction will be for them?

The old xenophobic  north south divide kicks in once again I'm afraid ... to be honest in the south we couldn't give a damn about the north south divide, but it seems a problem  in the north  ... ? Why is that, tell me?

Because the south gets a disproportionate level of infrastructure spending and media coverage? (London born btw)

The Environmentalists have stopped similar proposals in Sheffield by the Environment Agency who are, not SCC, responsible for our catchments.

The Council could facilitate matters and have supported the EAs work since 2007.

However the Environmentalists policy of  regarding our man made rivers, lakes and drainage as Green Corridors will continue to periodically create havoc to wildlife and property

Because there IS a north south divide which punishes the northern population.  e.g. transport funding from central government.

inside the city you want the water downstream and out of the way as fast as possible and you need the volume to store the held back water which is not going to be available in the city

 

further upsteam in a more rural location they might be fine

 

and as someone else has pointed out, it's the environment agency who are responsible for these things not the council.
