You are of course free (within reason) to control your own extinction but not that of others.

 

One of the brilliant bits of Evolution theory is that the genes of the individuals who think extinction is a good thing only very rarely manage to pass on their genes.

The problem with that isn't about space travel and distances.  It's about how long a 'Civilisation' will last. 

 

As things are...Best guess...??...Humans won't last another 500 years on Planet Earth before we wipe each other out.

 

The exact same goes for 'Any' of the Civilisations out there.!

 

This is why we will Never find life elsewhere...We wipe ourselves out before we are technically capable of finding it.

 

And Visa Versa.

The drive for space exploration would be honourable in terms of seeking answers to the questions of the universe if we were capable of managing our own planet first.

 

as it stands I would much rather see any expenditure going towards fixing the myriad of problems we currently face on our planet

You're incredibly small-minded. I guess you wouldn't encourage kids to bother to get into learning about the universe because after all what's the point?

 

Nothing wrong with extinction, currently it's what the human race deserves as far as I'm concerned the way it's going but that's an entirely different discussion.

Space travel is massively wasteful to the earth's resources, especially manned space travel. If humans can survive another thousand years, by then we "might" have the means to travel to other planets where it would be possible to make a home, but this kind of thing is way beyond our technology today. The only way space flight is even possible now is when it is directly supported by a national government of a wealthy country or several wealthy countries.

 

It is worth reminding everyone that George W Bush promised that his administration would put a man on Mars, but this was later "dropped" when it was pointed out to him that this adventure would cost the whole of the USA's annual budget for 1 year at the time.

 

 

Extinction is an important part of life on this planet it always has been and it always will.
