The council isn't pouring all its transport budget into road widening. Larger schemes like this are funded at city region level. The local allocation of money for smaller transport projects in Sheffield is relatively small and due to government austerity cuts, is about half of what it used to be a few years back. They spend it on all sorts of projects, including ones which improve facilities for walking and cycling.

Unfortunately the main benefits for highway schemes in this methodology are time savings for motorists, so capacity improvement schemes fare best.

I don't think this is true.

 

The measures and types of schemes you see here are very similar to those done everywhere.

 

What would you like to see that is different?

Maybe if the council removed some of the vast amount of un-necessary traffic lights that appear every 50 yards on Penistone Rd, maybe the traffic would run more freely.

Also consider when the proposed new  retail scheme opens opposite the Wednesday ground!

it's not the protest(ers) that'll cause the problem, it's 70 years of car-first (car only) transport planning.

 

why is the bus so expensive?

why are we allowed to park on bus routes? 

why are there no safe cycle routes?

why doesn't the tram go anywhere useful?

why does the tram have to share road space with so many cars?

 

we need to invest in not-car transport options, this will even free up road space for those few 'necessary' car journeys.

Excellent post, cars have been used as a cash cow for years whilst alternative public is ludicrously unreliable and expensive, now the same people who have allowed transport to get in this state want to charge you for the mess they've made, ridiculous.

Car travel isn't a cash cow, it's heavily subsidised*.

 

Which is another point. Why are cars subsidised, but public transport has to make a profit?

 

(*Add up the taxes, add up the costs, note the imbalance)
