taxman 12 #1 Posted August 27, 2019 So. A footballing history of 136 years ended because of feckless owners and a weak and useless 'fit and proper' owner test. The latest charlatan in charge bought the club for £1 then promptly moved all the silverware and trophies into another one of his companies. What a spiv... And the football league let him get away with it. Some of my best footballing memories following Bury. Phil Stant scoring 4 away at Mansfield, Tony Rigby buying pre-match fish and chips at Rotherham, Mark Carter scoring with his groin at Chesterfield. Not to mention 'Porno Paskin' and the psychopath Kevin 'Reg the Roofer' Hulme. A grim day.
 Share this content via...
staninoodle 175 #2 Posted August 27, 2019 Its scandalous whats gone on at Bury, and all presided over by the EFL,who need to hang their heads in shame they sanctioned the takeover,he was paying players way over what their budget allowed. The premier league arent blameless either, they move and adjust rules to suit the top 6 desires, the sooner they **** off and play in europe the better for me,then the money will dry up and wel get a more even playing field and unpick all the FAs stupid rules. utd & city could have prevented this but just shrugged and watched,Bolton have 2 weeks to NOT join their neighbours in football wilderness
 Share this content via...
Top Cats Hat 10 #3 Posted August 27, 2019 Maybe it is time football was nationalised and taken out of the hands of corrupt businessmen, be they local building firm owners or Russian or Saudi oligarchs.
 Share this content via...

Longcol 600 #5 Posted August 28, 2019 So sad. When Wednesday were in the old 3rd division back in the 70's, Bury was always my favourite away game. It was a place were away fans were treated like responsible adults instead of herded into pens. Smashing Thwaites pub near the ground, 3:15 kick off, all turnstiles open, friendly locals - a real pleasure.
 Share this content via...
taxman 12 #6 Posted August 28, 2019 Just seen a car crash interview with the so called owner of the club. He said it was easy for him to walk away from Bury as he had no business interests in the town and before he bought the club he didn't even know there was a team called Bury. He admitted he wasn't a football fan. Obviously a "fit and proper" person.
 Share this content via...

Some good times at Bury matches I remember that they allowed us into their social club, bit similar to the one at Hillsborough and no trouble with the home fans. When you came out after the match there was a newspaper seller not sure but I think it was called the pink un with as up to date scores as they could have. Wonder if there will be others after Bolton if they go under, I read the other day that a Swansea striker is on £80,000 a week, a lot of this money problem stems from the PL with them paying stupidly high wages to the players. When a team goes down players don't get their wages slashed because of the parachute payments and so it is a knock on effect, owners want to get their teams promoted to where there is more money and over stretch themselves. Meanwhile companies like Sky just keeps throwing money at the PL, look at last year didn't the BBC cut money to the EFL so they could pay more to the PL. They were in dire straights long before he came along though, he bought the club for one pound after all, clearly they were overloaded with debt already. He did say at the beginning of the year that things were bad, the club had even more debt than he realised and things were bleak. He shouldn't have owned it, shouldn't have been allowed to buy it, but the stark reality is they were in such a bad way the only thing that could save them was a billionaire pumping millions of their own money in to keep it afloat. Annie Bynnol 612 #10 Posted August 28, 2019 Plenty of clubs have been "removed" from the EFL through their "points deduction scheme". This protects the EFL image from a Bury/Bolton situation where they get the blame etc. Imagine a 1st divison owner selling the the ground to his partner. This "fit and proper" person now created a bankruptcy/administration, two sets of point deduction and transfer ban. 15 months later the club now on a sound financial footing with their ground back was relegated because of the points deductions. This year is an opportunity for a financially safer and fairer promtion/relegation to/from the National League with the possibility of promotion for four clubs. Bury can comeback. I worry more about Bolton with its expensive and very distant ground.
 Share this content via...
Runningman 148 #11 Posted August 28, 2019 A Bury memory for Blades fans. United were drawn away in the cup to Bury sometime in the 60's Me and a pal caught the special train laid on. The train got close to the Totley tunnel and then stopped at signals and we all waited and waited, could have been an hour or more. We eventually arrived at Bury after the 3-00 KO A train load of supporters running through the streets of the town to reach the ground The match was a draw and so was the replay at the Lane. We eventually beat them in the 2nd replay at Hillsborough, presumably the club's choice after the toss of a coin. Just had a look at the SUFC 1889 - 1999 book The match at Bury was on the 6th of Jan 1962, result 0-0 Att 14720 The replay at the Lane was on Wed 10th of Jan, 2-2 Pace & Allchurch scored Att 25043 2nd replay was on Mon 15th of Jan at Hillsborough. Blades won 2-0, Pace scored both. Att 26941
 Share this content via...

Also, why should it be down to these two clubs in particular to sort out the mess caused by years of mismanagement at another club? What has not been widely reported is that last year City allowed Bury to use their training facilities at Carrington free of charge provided that Bury made sure they were kept in good condition. Unfortunately Bury did not keep to their side of the agreement and the facilities are in a state of disrepair. This may be an indication of the attitude at Bury Football Club.
