Whalley Bridge Incident Overkill?

Recommended Posts

It's not overkill. What you can see from the news footage is that the earth under the auxiliary slipway has been largely washed away by water flowing under the slipway; which should not have happened.  This leaves the puddle clay core unballasted against the weight of the water behind it.  Adding ballast to the front of the dam is the correct solution, while the water has not been emptied from behind the dam.

Overkill or not   (  I don't think it is  )   people's lives could be at risk .............  full stop.

It’s risk aversion on a massive scale.

The bags of ballast are actually doing nothing to stabilise the structure and may even cause a problem once the water level is reduced on the other side. In the very unlikely event that the dam does collapse, the ballast will just provide shrapnel to do even more damage to the properties below.

Apart from anything else, the bags of ballast will need to be removed before any remedial work can take place. I suspect that decisions are being made by the emergency services rather than structural engineers.

Why are they dropping bags of ballast then?

My thought,

Looking at footage, if you look around the edges, it's looks higher than what you'd expect something like Ladybower to look like.

I think they'll probably have to drain this and replace it. It's old, and no historical beauty lost. Probably a huge scale job though redirecting pipes to counter the loss of its use.

When more 'modern' reservoirs such as Ladybower were built, they were designed to work within the limitations of the data available at that time.

This included calculations based on the likelihood of meteorological events happening.

These calculations are continually reviewed and updated. I am sure (?) that there will be a significant increase in the pace of reviewing.

Because, obviously, they don't have our posters detailed knowledge of the situation, gleaned from Look North and Google.

I’m dropping the authorities a line advising them to check this thread. It’ll get the dam fixed up quicker.

Would you like to be in a house under the dam at this time, no, unless you are not a full shilling. Evacuation must have been the right thing to do.

TBH I expect the first thing they did was look for the experts on SF to see if they had any view on how to proceed.

Must try harder.
