Sat Nav Built Into Cars

We are looking for a new car.

If we get one with sat nav, do we need to pay an annual fee to update the software? What sort of cost is this?

On mine it's about £200 a year for the full Europe maps, about £60 for the UK.

POI are also extra. Speed cameras are about £30

 

The system doesn't stop if you don't update, it will continue with the older maps and POI.

Usually you only pay to update the system, although some brand new cars are starting to come with internet connectivity which will probably involve a contract similar to a mobile phone contract.

I got the system updates in with the service but map updates were never included. It does also have internet but the option via Citroen is silly money. It will also link the net via your phone which is a better and cheaper option. I think the internet option is a bit pointless but each to their own. Link to the phone for hands free, music and maps are about all I use.

i've never updated maps on a sat nav ever, my 12 plate Megane is still running perfectly well.

I have a brand new Skoda as well, and the maps are no more up to date on that tbh than the Megane.

My daughter has a KIA Sportage GTLine and they tweak the maps at the annual KIA service.

It also has internet connectivity so you can tweak.

Mine isn't a subscription but you do need to pay for the maps upgrade if you want them, I'm sure they emailed me recently and said it was £100, to be honest I don't use it enough to bother paying for it but the vehicle does have a phone app which gives you various info about the car and allow remote locking etc, that is a subscription with multiple levels, basically the more information you want the app to give you the more you have to pay.

If you get a car that has either Android Auto, or whatever the Apple equivilent is, you can plug your phone into the car and use whatever map app you want to as your sat nav for free.

Our preference is Waze.

Most newer cars nowadays have Apple CarPlay and the android equivalent as standard. I use TomTom on my iPhone which streams it to the car dashboard via CarPlay. All my maps are offline so I don’t use mobile data and it includes all the speed camera locations. It only costs £17.99 a year.
