iansheff 82 #1 Posted July 17, 2019 Have just read the article below, 47 councils are charging householders to dump waste at waste sites, one council even charges £20 to dispose of an old toilet seat. Good to see that ministers are going to look into this it is nothing more than another tax on people. Councils cut services, raise council tax and still want more by charging people like gardeners £4 to dump soil. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/news/ministers-blast-tip-tax-imposed-by-the-back-door-as-one-local-council-charges-residents-£20-to-dump-a-toilet-seat/ar-AAEquON?ocid=spartanntp
 Share this content via...

melthebell 862 #3 Posted July 17, 2019 Whereve you been? Been happening donkeys years round here. For larger items and now you pay yearly for a garden waste bin. They shut the local tip over a decade ago and a lot of tips don't even allow public access these days
 Share this content via...

Pyrotequila 353 #6 Posted July 17, 2019 That's ridiculous, it genuinely is charging people twice... Just take your council tax bill and show it to them and tell them that you've already paid.
 Share this content via...
Eater Sundae 12 #7 Posted July 17, 2019 Do you blame the council or do you blame central government who decide how much tax the councils can collect as well as deciding what services they must provide and deciding how much is funded by central taxation? It suits everyone in local and central government to blame the other Easy to blame someone else when central government is politically different from the local government, but not so easy when they belong to the same party. The Government put the ball in local councils court by cutting back and making the councils get extra money anyway they can. They knew that a lot of people would just blame their council as it is the council that sets council tax and decides which services to cut. Just the Governments way of deflecting criticism onto councils to avoid being blamed.
 Share this content via...
Janus 28 #9 Posted July 17, 2019 Charging at dump sites is a no brainer. It's a step too far. It is going to cost the council more clearing up the big rise in fly tipping.
 Share this content via...

What alternatives can councils pursue, particularly when central government control both the level of income and the (council’s) obligations? They are also signed up to enforcing a levy (ie tax) on landfill. Dumping HAS to be paid for
 Share this content via...
Chez2 10 #11 Posted July 17, 2019 The council are only obliged to accept domestic household waste which building waste is not. You are not paying for building waste as its classed as construction / demolition waste. If work is done on your house by a builder it should be priced as part of the job, if its DIY a skip is cheap, especially a mini skip. Before anyone says anything about bias; we look after commercial waste not domestic waste.
 Share this content via...
