Alan was there maybe 7/8 years.

Think there’ll be a few around who’ve done longer than that.

fella in fagans been there for a long time for one off top of my head.

Wardy had spent many years (30?) at the top Freedom on South Road before moving to the Cottage.

I used to love the Walkley cottage.

then it closed for refurbishment.

when it reopened it was open plan, and there wasn't a seat in the house that didn't have direct sight of a least 5 massive screens showing football, more football, continuous football, talking about football, and even more football.

they've probably closed it while they fit some more/bigger screens.

when will pub owner realise some people actually hate football and would not enter a football showing pub if the beer were free.

Wonder who that leaves as Sheffield's longest serving licensee?

Pretty sure it was Wardy, and before that Les May at the Hallamshire on Commonside.

Les May.  Liked chatting to him.  Didn't he play for Accrington Stanley?

Bad reporting by The Star the lease for the pub is available so to say it's closing is a bad headline.

Think it was an old thread that was revived. Perhaps mods could change the title before the pub loses anymore custom?

I’ve changed the title to a more generic one.

He never quite got to play for them. He was down to play for Accrington Stanley A v Man City B  (or AS reserves v Man City A)- but Stanley went bust a day or so before the game. He used to have the letter from Stanley to the secretary of his team in Sheffield - thanking them for agreeing to Les being released to play for them - in a frame on the pillar by the bar - near the corner where Les used to stand when "working".

Les and Sue were a smashing couple - hope to see them again when I'm back in England.
