The Archers (Radio 4)

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Does the entire show take part in a studio, or are some parts of it recorded outside?

Listening to it at the moment, and it sounds as if they're actually out in the countryside somewhere.

Or is it all pretty good sound effects?

Thanks.

It is all recorded at the BBC Studios in Birmingham.

Outdoors scenes are recorded in ‘soundproof’ rooms to deaden the echoes and birds, trees and tractor sounds are dubbed on afterwards in post production.

Thanks TCH. Certainly didn't know that. Much appreciated 😊

Sadly, the skill of the foley artist banging coconuts together to make horses hoofs, treading in a box of gravel to simulate walking down a gravel drive or using their vast collection of assorted pieces of wood joined together by unoiled hinges to make squeaky door sounds is gradually being replaced by digital sound effects files.

Me neither, always thought it was about Robin Hood and his very merry men.

It's the only soap opera I'll entertain. Hate all the shouty ones on TV, but even high drama on The Archers is presented in a way that is considered.

A recent storyline involved an elderly chap admitting to his family that he'd been sexually abused when he was younger. It was dealt with in very sensitive tones, menace and despair clearly evident. You get the feeling that had the same topic been on a tv soap, there'd have been a lot of eyebrow-acting, noise and throwing things around for visual effect.

The great/bad thing about The Archers is they have small-village mentality nailed on.

I started listening to The Archers in the mid-70s. Stayed with it on and off ever since. About 15 years back I wrote to the BBC (remember writing letters, peeps?) asking a cast-related question. They replied and enclosed 3 postcards.
