Wood for smoking food?

Recommended Posts

Where can I get this in Sheffield?

I know you can get it online. But prefer to go and get it myself locally

Thanks in advance

Waitrose.

Look on the barbeque section.  They have hickory chips for smoking.  No doubt John Lewis do as well.

You could try Williamson's hardware store at Broomhill as well?  They seem to sell everything. Their barbecue stuff is upstairs on the first floor usually.

Or,  here's another idea, if you know a good traditional butcher who makes their own bacon, ask them.  Because they'll probably buy it for smoking the bacon.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear in my first post.

I’m looking for ‘chunks’ or logs, not chips. I’d need about 3 bags of those minuscule chips each time. Not practical or economical !

Try AMEY. I understand they prune the odd tree.

Seriously though- do you know what type of wood you want (oak/beech etc)? The stuff people use for wood burners can be bought locally by the sack. If you visit their store they will probably help you pick out the species you want.

How much food are you smoking at once?  Sounds like an awful lot to get through that much stuff.

Ideally Oak. But cherry, apple etc would be fine too.

Quite surprised there aren’t plenty of these type of outlets 🤔

I know of a butcher who used to get his oak sawdust from a joiners shop at Malin Bridge. Oak is harmful to animals, so the joiner makes sure it is separate from the other wood chippings, which goes for animal bedding.
