Presumably the BBC would be ok for people to joke about attacks on left wing politicians too then. What about a racist joke about a politician? Would that be worse than a joke about permanently disfiguring and potentially killing one? Who makes these ground rules? Context. Caine’s act was  often revolting Almost every comedian in the 70s made what would now be regarded as racist jokes, you can include comedians like Charlie Williams and later Lenny Henry too, get some perspective ! WalkleyIan   10 #112 Posted June 17, 2019 How about grapevine magazine's "joke" about stringing razor wire to decapitate cyclists?  Free speech, poor taste, or incitement to do harm?  https://kofthep.com/2019/06/16/i-heard-it-through-the-grapevine-sorry-marvin/
 Share this content via...

AMR67 Â Â 10 #114 Posted June 17, 2019 The BBCÂ obviously didn't think that Jo Brands comment was offensive, the programme is prerecorded and edited to fit into the timeslot. The editors must have thought it was OK to leave in.
 Share this content via...

These all offend me. I believe the grapevine article about stringing barbed wire across cycle routes has now been reported to the police  https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/stretford-dad-scarred-life-after-11616764  https://metro.co.uk/2016/11/14/cyclist-almost-decapitated-after-barbed-wire-is-strung-across-bike-lane-6257899/  https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/barbed-wire-boobytrap-discovered-at-throat-height-by-cyclist-on-footpath-a6928561.html
 Share this content via...

It is not stated anywhere (so far as I know), that ALL examples of free speech can be freely uttered and without redress even if they come under the general heading of "free speech." Nothing is 100% perfect.
 Share this content via...
crookesjoe   10 #117 Posted June 28, 2019 Danny Baker and Jo Brand were treated using different standards. It was hypocritical.  Danny Baker wasn't being racist imo, I saw his tweet and my first instinct was never to link a picture of a monkey to race.  Strange how all the outraged people seem to be so ready to link a monkey to race. That speaks volumes to me.  Jo Brand made a crappy comment imo, but my opinion doesnt matter. She should be free to make any joke she wants in a free society.
