Longcol   602 #38 Posted July 14, 2019 What a game - England came back from the dead! And the super over beats the penalty shoot out hands down for drama.  Superb sportsmanship from the Kiwis to immediately signal a six when Stokes was "caught" on the boundary.  Me and the missus celebrating with a bottle of fizz and we'll pretend the Bastille Day fireworks later this evening are celebrating an England win.  Best game of cricket since Yorkshire stuffed the Aussies by an innings at Bramall Lane in 1968. Sweetcheeks   15 #41 Posted July 14, 2019 What an amazing game of cricket, and thanks to Sky Sports, shown on terrestrial TV for us to see. Simply brilliant cricket from both teams, neither of whom deserved to lose.
 Share this content via...
Jim Hardie   527 #42 Posted July 14, 2019 What a team. Four Yorkshiremen, four foreigners and oh yes, three Englishmen.
 Share this content via...

Both boards would have known, both management teams and captains should have known. There’s a few salty comments coming from ex-players and that’s a shame. If the result was reversed Kane Williamson, total gent that he is, wouldn’t have shared the trophy because the rules didn’t say that’s what he had to do, NZ would have won and we’d have been gutted. Oddly, if there had been rain for two days it would have been shared. England won fair and square, stokes didn’t angle his bat to get the overthrows, jofra archer didn’t underarm the last ball of the super over, it was won by some crisp fielding and glovework - under immense pressure - on that last ball.  But having said all that, it needs to be a handled better in the future. Maybe another super over would be better than a technicality. Oh, and a better pitch, that was a bit of pudding!
 Share this content via...

They’ve been the best side in the world for a couple of years.  Have the Aussies stopped whining yet😀
 Share this content via...
staninoodle   175 #47 Posted July 18, 2019 In reality,it shouldnt have gone to superover, the umpires mistakenly gave England 6 runs off Stokes overthrowes, alas the law states when the throw comes in,the batsmen must CROSS to recieve four overthrows, and they clearly didnt cross,so one run should have been deducted, even though it hit the boundray rope. NZ were a credit to their nation, especially their captain,Kane Williamson, pretty sure they knew the umpires had fecked up,so massive credit for not making it an issue. NZ were a credit to their nation, especially their captain,Kane Williamson, pretty sure they knew the umpires had fecked up,so massive credit for not making it an issue. It's ambiguous.  Law 19.8 - overthrow or wilful act of fielder: If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be: any runs for penalties awarded to either side; the allowance for the boundary; and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.  Does the act mean when the ball struck Stokes bat? As that's what caused the boundary otherwise it would have been collected safely by the NZ keeper.  Doesn't really matter anyway, rule 2.11 overrules it - The umpires decision is final.  Also, had they given 5 runs, who knows how the game might have ended. Fairly sure Stokes would not have prodded the last ball (a full toss on his legs) out to try and grab a double, he'd have launched it into orbit and won the game outright. So many variables.
 Share this content via...
