So once again can you explain why in reference to ARM its better to "Stick with the EU"?

For the foreseeable, world trade is going to be dominated by the squabble between US and China so we are much better off as part of a large trading bloc where we have some kind of protection rather than on our own, relying on the goodwill of those who don't have our interests at heart.

Yes but as ARM are fundamentally a Japanese company but cosmetically British.  They also have strong links with Apple & given the fact that the UK will be out of the EU before there is any change in the the US administration, surely the owners of ARM are looking at the wider market outside the EU?  As stated earlier, the shareholders of ARM were quick to recommend the sale to Softbank, following the EU referendum.

The company is no longer traded on any exchanges so the shareholders of 2016 were happy, after they took their cut, including the original / start up management team, that the company went back into what amounts to private ownership.

The clipper chip? Don't remember that one, was it a film or something?

It was the US administration's attempt to foist an encryption chip on internet devices, it would have ensured secure communications, with a NSA backdoor built-in. The most cogent argument against it, which eventually scuppered the scheme, was that *any* back door offering privileged access to intelligence agencies can be coopted by "bad actors" without raising any alarms.

The point being that if Huawei/PLA are embedding secret eavesdropping tech in their hardware, then it's just going to provide a massive backdoor into the PLA's data network infrastructure for anti-Chinese malefactors.

It all smells very strongly of commercial protectionism to me.

This was the news at the beginning of this month - before any of this was announced:

Quote

"Huawei reportedly shipped 59.91 million smartphones in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 50.3 percent year-over-year. IDC attributes Huawei's astronomical phone growth to a "well-rounded portfolio targeting all segments from low to high" in China. Additionally, the market analytics firm says Huawei's high-end phones have helped create more brand allegiance for lower-priced devices.

In comparison, Apple and Samsung, both of which are now in third and first place, respectively, saw phone shipments decline."

Tim Cook & Donald Trump are friends.

Huawei made in the region of 59million sales Q1 2019, an increase of 50% over Q1 2018

Samsung made in the region of 72million sales Q1 2019, a decrease of around 8% over Q1 2018

Apple made in the region of 42million sales Q1 2019, a decrease of 20% over Q1 2018

Both Samsung's and Apple's decreases are clearly due to Huawei's rise. Apple are known to act 'in bad faith' when it comes to business, whether it be towards other companies or it's customer base.

It's not a stretch to consider Mr Cook had a whinge to Trump about being bested by a non-American company. Yeah Samsung isn't American but not a lot they can do about Samsung, huge corporation, deep pockets. Huawei however, relative newcomer on the cell phone market, easy target.

Apple iPhones are made in China. Apple won't check them all will they?

I am surprised that unfettered state access to everyone's 'secure' communications was not a point of objection! Then again, the state is unlikely to object on those grounds.

It's a while ago though, and encryption technology has no doubt matured a lot in the last 25? years or so. I wonder how feasible it is today, to encrypt and send information over the internet, in such a way that a third party (gov. intelligence agency etc) can intercept and decode such information.

The obvious fist point of weakness, being that human beings tend to work inside intelligence agencies, and some of them will have access to the keys...

I doubt they check any. So long as they're getting their cash from sales Apple doesn't really care about anyone's security, despite their claims.

When was the last time you heard about Google accounts of celebs being hacked for access to their Google Photos? I don't recall any. Yet iCloud is constantly breached.

As I said, this isn't about security at all, it's about money, specifically the money Apple has lost to Huawei.
