Time to quit Eurovision?

Recommended Posts

After another Eurovision humiliation it is clear how the rest of Europe think about the UK.

so I think we should just stop entering and give the money to charity.

Nothing to do with the fact that our entry was mediocre at best and just down right rubbish to be brutally honest.  There is far more support in other countries than ours, so it is not surprising.

Don’t be daft, it had nothing to do with the act it’s all politics and statement making.

Nah.

Quit it because Israel and Australia are members.

Concentrate on the "Euro".

Oh.

And write some decent songs.

Not even ones designed to appeal to European sensibilities.

Just some decent songs.

No.

It was appalling

Even with the politicking, those who remained aloof from that wouldn't vote for it.

Yes, it's time to say bye bye.   ( Has been for a few years now  )

Doesn't help when the song is bad either.

This year's entry was DIRE  and performed badly too.

We deserved to come last.

Time to quit Eurovision?  Without any doubt, yes.

If any one on here thinks our mediocre song was the poorest on the night, then they must be tone deaf. We are just having the urine taken out of us, and enough is enough.

It wouldn't matter if Ed Sheeran or Adele were singing a great song they would still end up near the bottom.

Isnt that like a petulant child picking up his football and going home just because he is losing?

Of course this year we were dead last - I think there is one very clear reason why that is.

Regardless, England lose in the Euros and World Cup time and time again, but people are still more than happy to get all excited and support them spending thousands and millions of pounds on merch in the process.

Eurovision is not about the winning.   A vast majority of countries dont even get as far as the final anyway.  At least the UK gets a free fast track pass each year and doesn't have the real humiliation of not even getting on the short list.

It was a crap song this year.   Crap staging and crap performance from a unknown whose only real exposure has been bouncing around a few talent shows.

Just take it for what it is.   A few hours of camp gaudy silliness each year which without doubt brings Europe together more than 1000 political statements and rallys.

For those who really want to get in depth on the question Yougov have already asked.

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/05/16/brits-want-leave-eurovision-52-48

Spoiler alert:   It was 52/48 in favour of leave eurovision.      Where have we heard those figures before?

It's hard to understand how a country that has produced so many classic pop songs over the last 60 years comes up with such mediocre, nondescript songs when Eurovision comes around. Reform Herman's Hermits or get the Rolling Stones to write and perform one last classic song like 'Star Star' next year.

My biggest issue is that they have stopped using established artists and instead seem to push for some talent show contestant in some faux attempt at showing the people that their choice counts.

Other countries dont seem to do that.  Many of their acts are already high sellers and established before they even get put up for selection.

Having said that, after seeing Madonna's performance maybe that isnt the best approach after all.

If you look at the years when we used to do well it was almost always established acts that, if not at the height of their popularity, weren't far from it.

Appearing on it doesn't have the credibility it used to have and I think this puts off current established acts. They seem to want to be taken seriously rather than accept they are primarily light entertainers. Maybe we need to put forward something like Lordi that doesn't take itself seriously and embraces the camp silliness.

As for expecting it to be ditched, viewing figures for the first semi-final[1] where up 20% on last year - it's going nowhere.

[1] None are available for the final yet.
