To live a thousand years.

I've just finished Paul Broks's "The Darker  the Night the Brighter the Stars.

In this book he writes that the first person to live to a thousand has already been born.

Is this just science fiction?  If it were to be true, would it even be desirable ?

It has to be Keith Richard. 😄

Some interesting comments -thank you.

According to Brokes, not everybody will get the opportunity. The super rich will, of course, be able to afford the level of medical intervention necessary to make it even remotely possible to live to a thousand. For instance, organ transplants ,blood replacement, gene therapy, etc, etc.

The other consideration is that cures will be available for the multitude of degenerative diseases that beset humankind -not palliative care, but real cures.

The organ donors? Now there's a thought.

We'll soon be able to grow organs either in pigs, or simply in a lab (oratory, not rador).

At the moment though we're still quite some way from really understanding what aging is.

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say it's just science fiction.

The  Cambridge gerontologist Aubrey de Grey reckons we are making progress towards solving the mystery of the ageing process.  Who knows?

One argument against living for a thousand years doubts the durability of human identity. One may opt for a thousand but as the centuries pass you become vastly altered, physically and mentally. "Constantly re-engineered". The body would change shape, colour and proportion according to fashion, and the brain capacity would be boosted a hundredfold by neural implants. You would no longer be you.

The pursuit of a thousand years is thus self-defeating-so it goes.

Blackydog,

It has also been said that the first person to set foot on Mars has already been born\(Horizon programme. on living on Mars). So we are going to Mars
