Danny Baker? Racist or Misguided Fool?

Hi alchresearch, racist or not it's a particularly unkind way to depict a new born baby, I'm sure if someone depicted one of Danny Baker's children as a monkey in a suit wearing a bowler hat he might understand the upset such an image might cause.

Now, do I believe he's a racist? No I don't think so, I've liked his shows for many years and particulary enjoyed his appearance on Desert Island Discs.

Was the image racist? I'm afraid it is, not only because it depicts a mixed race child as a primate, but because of the historical resonance of the association,  an association created by white people to mock and demean black ones, believe me during my childhood I was regularly on the receiving end of it by people who now may well wince when they recall how they once behaved.

The fact you (or Danny Baker) don't see it as racist isn't necessarily the problem, but by promoting the picture he's providing succour to people who inherently regard black folks negatively.

Never called a baby / child a little monkey then?

Given Louise Pepper is this morning's sidekick, does this mean he's taken taken Lynsey Hipgrave down with himself too?

Then he might have been better advised to pick an image where the child he's picking on - for want of a better phrase - is mixed race. Use a clown or whatever. Keep that image if the duchess of Cambridge has another, far safer ground.

Having said all of that, the BBC have gone big quite quickly, just as they did with Russell brand a few years back. Clarkson had to literally punch someone in the face to get sacked.

Russell Brand fell on his own sword before his suspension was completed - it's quite possible they would have binned him off anyway, but at least he had the decency to resign.

Unlike that pompous overblown ego that is Jonathan Ross.

That is very true.

The difference is that Clarkson was extremely popular and the face of one of BBC televisions highest earning shows.

You think long and hard before you get rid of The golden goose.

Unfortunately Danny Baker is not a Clarkson. He's on the Alan Partridge hours stuck at the back end of the radio 5 schedules.   A lot easier to make a very swift decision to get rid and save face to the corporation against the frothy mouthed complaining public

Alan Sugar survived after doing far worse than Danny Baker. I wonder why?

It appears that he made some comment comparing the Senegal football team to beach sellers.

This is ridiculous. We have the police moaning about cuts and how they don't have the resource to help stabbing victims, or people having their houses robbed, yet here they are yet again using precious resources on a silly picture on the internet. It's absurd.

Whether Baker is racist I'm not sure...but portraying the royal baby - much talked about for having just a wee bit of black heritage - as a chimpanzee? What the hell was he thinking? If he's stupid enough to fail to notice the negative associations of that one he deserves all he gets.

If it wasn't a racist idea, what was it? Is the chimp intended to suggest the royal babe is less than human or what? I don't get it at all.

A £multi-millionaire media professional with 40 years experience in the industry was unaware that what he did might be racist? It stretches the credulity.

To be anti-monarchy is fine. To use racism reveals just how low of character many of these wealthy media professionals truly are.

Are you sure he's a multi-millionaire? He had to be bailed out by Chris Evans when he had cancer a while back.

As for casting aspersions about him simply because he in the media, he's been a life long Labour activist and supports Jeremy Corbyn - imagine what some of the right wingers on here would make of that.

Do I think he's racist? He has a history of mouthing off before considering the consequences and I think this a particularly ill judged example of that. If he'd done a "the royal family are secretly shape shifting lizards" gag nobody would have paid it any attention.

I dont really follow the royals, i do  read the news but generally skip over news on the royal family (nothing against them I just have little interest in them) - I had no idea Meghan Markle had any black heritage.  Its not obvious. I could understand a lot of other people being unaware.

Where have you been living for the last few years - it must have been mentioned in at least half the stories about her since her marriage into the royal family was announced.
