The Brexit Party thread. All brexit party discussion here please.

A couple of points for you to take note of.

We expect it to remain civil and within our usual forum rules.

As this is about an election the following will apply

Here at SF we try to ensure fair play, and that includes during elections. We don't allow links direct to political party websites or to sites that spread spurious stories for political influence at any time, and that will continue. We also ask candidates and those campaigning for political parties to follow our code of conduct in the run up to elections. In order to not provide any influence unfairly to any side, we ask that those who are standing or who represent a party refrain from posting in threads to do with political discussion or elections during the 4 week run up to the vote.

It's  mandatory and your account will be suspended if you don't do it.

If you have any questions please take them to the helpdesk rather than starting threads attacking the forum team. If you do that then your account will be suspended.

The 97% included all the Tory eurosceptic MEP and all the members of the various EU27 eurosceptics parties UKIP is allied with in the EU parliament.

Do you think putting pharmaceutical companies' profits ahead of safer drugs prescribing and saving the NHS money is a good idea - as at least one UKIP MEP did?

Would that be the one who brought to attention  big pharma lobbying in the EU, seems like you may have that the wrong way around.

"Nigel Farage was asked whether he believed that it was worth risking the pharmaceutical industry worth billions of pounds and thousands of jobs, he said: "I don't buy the fact that a pharmaceutical company is in Britain because it's in the EU.

"I have to say that I'm not wholly happy with the way that much of the pharmaceutical industry has behaved."

He criticised the pharmaceutical industry for putting alternative medicines out of business and lobbying in Brussels.

"Only 12 % of the entire British economy is exports to the EU," he said. "Our biggest industry isn't pharmaceuticals. It's financial services of all kinds."

The vote was in 2014 - before Cameron even promised a referendum.

Your attempts to introduce other issues don't change the fact that UKIP MEPs voted against improving patient safety and saving the NHS money.

Then you should back up your claim.

I've already given an example of where having information about all trials would have saved money. Drugs companies try to hide trials that show their drug aren't as effective as they claim. It's not hard to understand that giving people drugs that don't work is a waste of money.

As for patient safety, here's one example where not having full data about the side effects of drugs resulted in patients being harmed: Drug giant Merck accused of deaths cover-up. There are many, many others.

As for how they voted, it was on www.votewatch.eu at this link but that no longer works as the site only has details of votes in the current term of the parliament available by default. There's a legacy site which probably has the details but I can't access that.

But how is that relevant as the USA has different rules to the EU and the drug was also withdrawn in 2004?

They hid the results of negative drugs trials from everyone, not just the USA. So it was approved in the EU based on the same incomplete information that it was in the US. There are plenty of UK victims of their behaviour: Hundreds of British claims expected after $250m award in US Vioxx case.

The irony of all this is if Merck had been honest about the drug's side effects it wouldn't have been prescribed to people it wasn't suitable for, they wouldn't have had lost so much money in lawsuits and it might still be available today[1]. It's worth noting the drug wasn't banned. Having spent so much effort persuading doctors to prescribe it to the wrong people, Merck decided the best way to stop that was to stop making it available.

When it was withdrawn is irrelevant. The EU legislation was about trying to prevent the same thing from happening with other drugs.

[1] Possibly not as Etoricoxib is now used as as an alternative to Rofecoxib (Vioxx's pharmaceutical name).

AAUI, UKIP have a policy of not voting on matters which further the aims of the EU, which would include those points mentioned above. We really should remember that they aren't there to help the institution succeed, they are there to dismantle it so far as the UK is concerned. Make of that what you will, but it isn't surprising that UKIP would abstain from all sorts of day to day EU business.

Except of course, when the European Parliament discussed their pension arrangement, when surprise surprise, they all turned up for.

I think you have just described the majority of politicians in Westminster too except in Westminster they also vote for a wage increase.

Absolutely, which means that those Brexit/UKIP populist politicians who talk about challenging the establishment and 'draining the swamp' should be seen for what they are, simply wanting a place at the trough for themselves.
