Hopscotch,

orange and lemons-- the big girls had the whole lot of us playing it one playtime.

Skipping.

One potato, two potato, etc.

Cat's cradle.

All of the above and 'What time is it Mr Wolf'

Throwing 'sticky bobs' at each other

Sliding on pieces of cardboard down grass bankings on Underbank at Stannington

We used to put a tennis ball in one of our Mums old stockings, stand with our backs to a wall and bounce it against the wall singing rhymes.

Kiss catch

Skipping with a very long rope - a girl at each end turning the rope and everyone taking their turn to run in for a few jumps and out again. I remember ' house to let, apply within, as I go out Mrs ... comes in'.

Elastic skipping - a long piece of elastic - usually made up of lots of bits knotted together - a person either side with the elastic around their legs and one person in the middle - never any good if you had buckles on your shoes from memory !

Ah! such good times!

Indoors :-  Darts=( Cottage wall suffered a bit )  Dominos,  Draughts,  Hang Man,  Lotto=( New name Bingo )  Ludo,  Snap,  Snakes & Ladders.

Outside :-  Blind Man's Buff,  Dens=( Sheets & wood clothes dryer )  French Skipping,  Hide & Seek,  Hopscotch,  Show Jumping=( We were the horses jumping over boxes, buckets and brooms )   Pond Stone Skimming,  Who Could Pull Most Fresh Water Mussels out of the Dam=( Laid on tummy, head over dam edge, flat ended twig, push in what you thought was Mussel mouth till it grabbed, and pull )  Then we put them back for next time. It used to fascinate people walking by.

Our village gang  of 4 boys & 4 girls,  we had such a wonderful care free childhood. I think those of our era were the lucky ones!
