What outdoor games did you play when you were growing up

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

We're due to visit Shiregreen with our big travelling tardis of Play ( a 20ft shipping container called Playbox) at the end of May and we want to learn games of old to share with the young

What and where did you used to play when you were growing up?

Also are there any Shiregreen resident Facebook groups we should be aware of?

Marbles, conkers, hide and seek, cricket with a homemade bat and an old tennis ball, wickets chalked on a wall, football anywhere you could with two items of clothing for goalposts( anything you could kick for a ball if no ball available), hopscotch. Fighting the kids from other streets or towns lol.

Ah yes, a good wooden trolley with pram wheels was the ultimate status symbol as a kids on our streets. It's a wonder we are still here. Start at the top of Crowder hill, and off we went, all the way to the park at the bottom. We were fine! we had that high spec wooden hand brake on one of the wheels!!!

In the Summers it would be Longley Baths.  The year round games were  tennis and golf (again, in Longley Park) The street games were hide and seek, football, cricket etc. With the odd scrap with lads from other streets thrown in.

Not sure if it's the same thing but we used to play something at school called Bulldog. We'd play it in the gym with a medicine ball in the middle, half the class on each side of the gym and go for it. The object of the game was to get the ball to the other side...no rules as such!
