Mr Chesterman at the City General Hospital

Recommended Posts

I work as a Cardiology Doctor at the Northern General Hospital and Sheffield University, but am also studying for a Diploma in the History of Medicine.

I am researching the life and work of Mr Judson Chesterman, who was a surgeon specialising in chest and heart surgery at the City General Hospital (now Northern General) from the 1940s to the 1970s . He was quite a remarkable character, making several important advances such as performing the first operation in the world to replace the mitral heart valve in 1955, and also  being the first to use a heart-lung machine in Europe, all done here in Sheffield.

I would love to hear from anyone with memories of him or any information generally relating to heart surgery in Sheffield during this period. You can post on here, message me through the forum or email [email protected]

Thank you!
